Artificial intelligence is a technology that has been developed recently and has taken the technology industry by storm. By definition, artificial intelligence is a technology that gives machines the chance to operate as humans and do activities that would normally require humans to involve their brains to execute. The paper considers two articles for reaction. The first article is titled “Will democracy survive big data and artificial intelligence?” by Helbing (2017). The article discusses the manner in which artificial intelligence has transformed society for better and worse in equal measure. This puts the society at crossroads because some of the developments are not compatible with the core values of the society. The other article is the “seven ways AI will help humanity, not harm it” by kshyap (2018). This article has discussed the different ways with which artificial intelligence will impact on society.

In his article, Helbing. (2018) mentions that technology has come a long way and that man’s ability to improve technology constantly gives him the chance to improve living standards in society by substantial strides. He reiterates that soon enough, every aspect of society will be digital and lives will largely depend on technology. Even with these developments, Helbing (2018) underscores that there are various ways that technology can be a disadvantage, especially considering the economic consequences of digital revolution. For example, technology shall have claimed the job opportunities of humans as machines will be able to do jobs that humans are currently doing. The major aspect that the author is trying to put across is that artificial intelligences can effectively lead to a programmed society and programmed citizens. In other words, the more technology reveals about citizens, the less their freedom to make their own choices, which substantially affects democracy.

I find the article interesting because the manner with which it has approached the artificial intelligence issue. The way the authors has discerned the different aspects of the concept clearly shows an in-depth understanding of the subject. I was particularly interested in the part of the article where the authors linked artificial intelligence and programming of citizens. According to the authors, various aspects of society seem to be using technology on another level. For instance, the government can use algorithms to woe undecided voters to vote for it, something that substantially affects democracy. It can therefore be seen that citizens would not have the chance to freely exercise their democratic right of choosing a candidate of their choice. The results of such actions is that citizens will operate as though they are programmed and unable to make choices by themselves. These developments are directly related to problems in society today. Currently, it is no secret that governments hire experts to try to influence the results of elections by nudging undecided voters towards them. This manipulation has a significant effect and may even go undetected. To a substantial extent, tit raises ethical concerns about the technology itself.

The second article talks about seven ways with which artificial intelligence will benefit humanity and not harm it. Here, too, the author is trying to highlight the manner which technology has impacted society albeit in a positive way. Some of the points that Kashyap (2018) gives in regard to the benefits of artificial intelligence include the enhancing automation, eliminating the necessity for humans to perform tedious tasks, smart weather forecasting, next generation disaster response, freeing humans of the obligation of taking responsibilities, creating a linkage between creativity and technology, and ensuring zero scope for errors. Kashyap’s article gives information that is no different from that of Helbing (2017). The only difference is that Helbing (2017) has given the concept a different approach in comparison with Kashyap (2018). While Kashyap is trying to reveal the positive side of the technology, Helbing (2017) exposing the deleterious side of the same.

These materials are relevant to my life and general career in different respects. Even though I understand that the society has transformed immensely, I did not have the idea that it would do in the ways outlined in the paper. I am particularly worried about the way society and citizens are being programmed by artificial intelligence. It has appeared to me that humans do not have free will anymore once artificial intelligence comes to play. Therefore, I got to understand that as much as artificial intelligence has transformed society for the better, it has come with critical consequences worth highlighting. This topic is also relevant to me because my generation is one that continues to fully depend on technology to handle various aspects. Therefore, I must be concerned at every development because it is the only way that I will be able to generate important ideas to take me through the highly dynamic society. I would recommend these works to others, particularly those of my generation interested in the realm of technology. Admittedly, they give essential insight into what the world is today and the direction it is taking in terms of technological advancement.
