Case Study
The friend has already formed a mental blockage to the idea of seeking psychotherapy. The friend apportions their speaking about their problems as causative to their state of depression, without any justification as to the notion. This helps them block the idea of directly addressing the problem and instead chooses to ‘lock’ away their emotions as the best possible solution to their problem. This shows that the friend is in a state of self-denial and as such, refuses to ‘open’ his mind to the possibilities open for them. He needs cognitive therapy to help him find a ‘release’ that opens them to other available ideas. This provides them with the needed therapeutic understanding that helps them better deal with the issues they are facing.
Cognitive Therapy Techniques
The therapists can use behavioral techniques in testing the thoughts held by the friend. This approach would help provide the feedback as to whether the friend is self-criticizing and provide the needed intervention to help them change their way of thought and self-perception.

The therapist can use pleasant activity scheduling technique to help the friend deal with the depression they have. This approach would help the friend realize that they do not fail at everything, rather, they need to take a step back and reset their priorities right. It is an activity meant to create positivity.
Appropriateness of the Biomedical Approach
Biomedical approach to depression is crucial especially if it is done with the supervision of a doctor. This is because it helps in creating stability that allows the psychiatrist to address the underlying problems that the patient may be facing. Importantly, it provides a reprieve for the patient especially if they are in pain or are experiencing psychotic episodes that may hinder the therapeutic process. However, the biomedical approach should be done together with therapeutic intervention as it helps in addressing causative issues to depression.
