In your own words, what is epigenetics?

Epigenetics is a set of instructions that are located on the top of people's DNA and Histone. The information is transmitted during the cell division, and it affects how the cells read and interpret the genes encoded in DNA (Feiberg & Fallin, 2015). As a result, it leads to noticeable differences between cells and organs despite having similar genetic chemicals. Epigenetics is also responsible for the differences between identical twins who share similar DNA. As much as epigenetic is a vital component that enables different cells and organs to perform their roles properly, it may also lead to health issues. The Epigenetic marks which help the cells to understand the genes' contents may provide misleading information. For instance, the epigenetic marks may instruct the chromatin to compact, making it hard for the cell to read the DNA components. Consequently, the cell may begin to malfunction, causing some genetic diseases like various types of cancers.

What is a useful takeaway from this video that you can apply to your own life?

I have learned that our genetic composition and functioning are significantly influenced by the environment and the things we consume. We can keep ourselves healthy by adapting to a healthy lifestyle. This video has acted as an eye-opener because I believed that people do not control their genes, but that is untrue because individuals can build healthy epigenome through their lifestyle(Griffin, 2012). I intend to use the video's knowledge to incorporate a healthy lifestyle by watching the food I consume and avoiding alcohol consumption and smoking. Additionally, I have learned that epigenetic marks can be transmitted to multiple generations; however, the situation can be reversed by maintaining a healthy diet. Whatever action I take as an individual will greatly impact my future generation, which may decrease or increase their lifespan. I intend to impact my future offsprings positively. Therefore, I will engage in healthy activities and diet.
