Many people talk about the value of an elevator pitch, but few have a sense of what makes a good elevator pitch. Todd Dewett’s videos in Lynda.com explore the benefits of an elevator pitch, how to make a connection, and how to structure a pitch.

From the videos, the most important factor of an elevator pitch is that speech is confident, not arrogant. One must be confident enough to strike a conversation with a stranger without appearing obnoxious or conceited. The second factor is that the pitch must be short in duration. The pitch should be 15 to 20 seconds considering the two people just met. The third factor is to remain general to the industry. The individual engaging in an elevator pitch just met the other person, and he/she should keep the information general to connect with the other person (Higgins, 2015). While the elevator pitch should be general, the information should also be specific and distinctive to the company’s mission and values. The individual giving the elevator pitch has to remain unique by sharing experiences and future goals in a manner that differentiates him from others. The individual has to consider the company that the listener works for, the company mission and vision in the pitch. Lastly, the elevator pitch should use positive and compelling words. It is essential to keep the entire tone of the elevator pitch on a positive note to create an excellent first impression.

Todd Dewett describes an elevator pitch as the process of planting seeds not knowing when they will sprout. Elevator pitches improve one’s network, and when done right it opens more doors. Individuals must educate themselves on how to give good elevator pitches so that they can capitalize on opportunities and create their unique professional identities.
