I do agree with my classmate’s post that internal colonialism theory sufficiently describes the race relations in the United States. This is because racial inequality is still evident in the United States today. Notably, people of color are still treated as an inferior race and experience some form of exploitation. Moreover, they do not have equal access to resources rather they have to struggle with the poor facilities available for them. Racial and ethnic inequalities still exists because of involuntary integration as explained by internal colonialism theorists (Mini-lecture 11). Typically, the people of color have less power hence are ready to move slowly in the society. Moreover, they do not have a say in the institutions of the country since they are treated as aliens hence face much discrimination. Additionally, the issue of destroying the culture of the colonized in internal colonization theory is real since the Americans undermine cultures of the immigrants not to help them grow but to make them weaker and ensure they do not overtake them. This is unlike the case for assimilation theory where the immigrants have to accept the culture of the Americans if they want to rise up. Therefore, for assimilation theory, destroying the culture of the immigrants helps them to grow not to get weaker. Nevertheless, assimilation argues that United States is open to all as long as one is willing to assimilate. I agree with the post that the issue of assimilating is not real but rather just a way of justifying their treatment to the people of color. From the video on “What Kind of Asian are you,” it is clear that the Americans have a funny vision ship about people from other races due to the stereotypes they hold about them (vid.1:38). The classmate post is right to suggest that the government need to put in place measures to end inequality by reducing discrimination in employment and access to resources.
