What is Prejudice, Stereotypes, and Discrimination?

Prejudice

Prejudice is defined as the knowledge, emotion or belief one holds concerning a certain group. It is the prejudgment a person holds without verification of factual details. Prejudice usually results in unfair judgment or conclusion regarding something. It can also make someone to favor a certain group over the other based on the information or belief they hold. Prejudice can be illustrated by a statement such as children with blue eyes are superior to those with grey eyes thus resulting in favoring them over the other category.

Stereotypes

Stereotype is associated to race, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender. It is the generalization of groups in relation to their characteristics. It is failure to take the individual differences of individuals in a group in account. They are usually positive when referring to the persons group and negative if it concerns a different group. A member form a dominant class or race refer to the other subordinate suggesting that the group is lazy. It is created and recycled by the subordinate groups who have been assimilated in other cultures. For example the whites are superior to the blacks in America.

Discrimination

Discrimination is the actions that happen concerning age, sex, health, religion and other social indicators that cause unfair treatment among the groups. Discrimination can result in unfair hiring systems when it concerns sex or race discriminations. There are laws that are in place against discrimination that strive to eliminate it from the society. Despite the interventions, discrimination cannot be eliminated from the society because it is a social fact that is maintained by the society. Discrimination takes different forms such as quality of healthcare available for the poor in the society or racial discrimination that results in unfair judgment and allocation of resources.
