Cartesian Method is an approached formed by Descartes on how to discover the truth without relying much on consciousness. Before devising a Cartesian method, Descartes doubted all possible sources of knowledge. He doubted the knowledge from authority, sensory experience and from reason. Concerning the knowledge from authority, Descartes argued that experts often differ. Concerning knowledge from sensory experience, Descartes argued that sensations we have are inside our mind and hence we cannot claim direct experience of the external world at all. Knowledge from reasoning is also vulnerable to errors. With all these doubts, Descartes devised a new way of claiming new knowledge- Cartesian method. In this method, Descartes believes that all material things, all bodies and all animals behave like machines. He devised a mechanistic model. Animals, according to this model, do not think. They just behave. Other bodies push them to do so. Consequently, the Cartesian method is anchored on the fact that various aspects in the world interact according to uniform laws of motion. Descartes stresses the fact that what is important is not our minds and brains but rather the objective things in the outer world that cause them.

The term Cartesian was used because it shows how human mind can be influenced by immaterial things and that quantities in motion are channelled from one body to the other causing a new behavior. Cartesian vortex is used to explain the nature of displacement. The Cartesian method believes that human thinking can be configured just like the workings of a clock. Human anatomy such as the heart, according to Descartes obeys the geometric method, which is based on the motion of parts. Sensations and passions also obey geometric method.
