Among the many qualities, consistency or the lack of it is the defining factor between failure and success in a team. If a leader behaves in a manner that is inconsistent in either actions or words, then, followers are likely to lose trust and confidence in the person’s ability to lead effectively (Negruti, Hristova, & Larsen, 2015).
Consistency is the primary key to leadership and team success. It is believed that good leaders are those that can attract followers. Though this is true somehow, good leaders also know where they are headed to otherwise they risk wandering aimlessly. To achieve leadership success, one must pay attention to detail, be committed, and focus on the set goals. Lack of a steadfast direction blurs the goals and slowly the leader loses momentum. By remaining consistent in how one lives out the mission, a leader can benefit by achieving leadership success (Lencioni, 2007).

In team building, team size matters a lot. Different team sizes behave in different ways. Failure to strike the correct balance in terms of the team size means that the team may end up with many preventable challenges (Negruti, Hristova, & Larsen, 2015). Although no number can be used to define what a good-sized team is, both too big and too small teams have their unique benefits and risks. If a team is too small, it risks skill gaps in vital areas whereas when a team is too big, it risks losing cohesiveness and productivity (Lencioni, 2007). An interesting point to make is that team size greatly affects leadership success. It is impossible for a leader to manage, mentor and coach a big team as opposed to a small team.

Team member selection is an important step in building a team. A leader must select team members based on their skills and constitutions to completing project tasks (Brent & Dent, 2017). Failure to select the right members, with the right skills means that the tasks will be done in an inappropriate manner. Eventually, the project may fail to achieve the intended purpose.
