Bain’s Directions to Effective Reading
In his book “ What The Best College Students Do ,” Ken Bain seeks to provide readers with directions for effective reading, which are seen as being key towards improving one’s achievements as a student within the college environment. It must be noted that the directs that Bain gives as part of his book seek to support different features of learning, which he seeks to describe in the book as being ‘best.’ Firstly, the directions given seek to build on the understanding that best college students focus more on their passion in education rather than excellence. Bain argues that students ought to focus much of their effort towards enriching their curiosity, interest, and fascination through their education within college institutions. That means that it becomes essential for them to build on their passion, which helps towards supporting one of the key features of learning.
Secondly, Bain gives directions for effective reading arguing that students in colleges should not always be worried about their failures but should always learn to embrace areas where they have failed in one way or another. According to Bain, this means that students ought to always get comfortable with their failures, as this would provide them with a front through which to bring out their overall abilities to perform better in future. One of the most distinct features of learning is that students must always understand the importance of improving on their abilities depending on what they learn. That means that they are always expected to make themselves better at all times regardless of the failures that they experience.

Thirdly, Bain also highlights the importance of ensuring that students learn the importance of making a personal connection with their studies. The connection that students have with their studies would serve as one of the ways through which to define their performance considering that it becomes much easier for them to focus on areas that they need to improve. For Bain, this is one of the key aspects of focus for any student that intends to become successful in anything that he or she does as part of education while ensuring that students build on the overall capacity for students to achieve set out goals. That supports effective learning considering that students tend to build on their capacities towards improving their learning abilities while in college. Bain believes that creating that personal connection to their studies would mean that students would be in a rather effective position allowing for enhanced learning in the college environment.
Lastly, Bain directs students towards ensuring that they advance their overall abilities towards reading by ensuring that they think actively, which would create an avenue for curiosity towards their education. One of the key challenges that students experience as part of their engagement in college education is the lack of motivation towards what they do, which affects their ability or capacity to achieve set out objectives. Bain believes that this would be solved in the event that students understand the value of active thinking, which would serve as a measure allowing them to develop some sense of curiosity. The curiosity developed will play a critical role towards defining their overall abilities to read effectively while ensuring that they are able to understand what they are reading.
Bain’s Claims for Reading
In the book, Bain makes several claims with regard to the idea of reading, which I can reflect based on my own experiences. The first claim that Bain makes is that students ought to always understand the importance of setting goals for themselves as part of the learning process, which would help build on their capacities towards effective learning. Personally, I have always understood the importance of setting my own goals, which provides me with a front through which to ensure that I am able to plan how I expect to read. The goals that I set for myself provide me with a clear framework through which to build on my capacities towards the reading process. That means that I am able to define what I expect as part of my engagement in the process of reading, which builds on an effective front for having to reflect on the importance of reading.
The second notable claim that Bain makes as part of his discussion of reading is that students should always learn the importance of asking big questions, which they would be able to answer based on their engagement in the process of learning. Asking big questions helps in creating a front through which to define a student’s curiosity towards a given subject, which is important towards defining the importance of reading. From my personal experience, I tend to create questions that I seek to answer based on my reading, which ensures that I am in an effective position through which to understand what I am a reading. By asking some of these questions, I find myself in a rather effective position through which to ensure that I am able to build on my interests towards reading.
