I believe the federal government should do more to provide healthcare to Americans. My opinion is that the federal government should provide free healthcare to all American citizens. Currently, healthcare has been delegated to private entities that are making huge profits at the expense of the lives of citizens. The private healthcare providers have become so powerful that whenever attempts are made to have universal healthcare, they use their immense power to lobby members of Congress to shoot down bills aimed at providing free healthcare. I think part of that lobbying is corruption because lawmakers are compromised to thwart attempts of providing universal healthcare. Other developed countries such as Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom have comprehensive medical care schemes which make healthcare affordable, and I do not see any reason why the United States should not borrow from its peers.
Other than healthcare, I believe another essential service which the government provides and affects my daily life is security. The security personnel make the country safe and livable, making it possible to work, learn and do many activities without fearing for one’s life and security. I do not approve of the government assigning security duties to private sector. For instance, I cannot imagine the private sector managing police officers and controlling security apparatus. If the private sector is to be assigned more of such duties, they will protect only those people who can afford to pay, and leave the low-income communities vulnerable. Wealthy individuals and communities can also manipulate the private sector to propagate discrimination on the basis of race and social-economic lines. At the end, the security situation in the country may deteriorate and become uncontrollable.
