Our bodies are designed to rest at least once in a 24 hour period. It is for this reason that there is day and night. Sleep important for it lets the body rest and rejuvenate for the next day. Moreover, it is incredibly beneficial for our health. Sleep is in the same category as exercising and eating healthy in as far as living a healthy lifestyle is concerned. It is unfortunate that human activities have made it difficult to have regular sleep patterns. Due to tough financial times, most people are sleeping less than they used to.

How is sleep related to psychology? How can you relate this information to your life? Why?

Sleep is vital for our memories and our overall psychological wellbeing. When we sleep enough, we consolidate both our physical and intellectual memories. What is more, there is a close link between lack of sleep and stunted brain growth and inhibited cognitive functions. In the same breath, lack of adequate sleep can result in psychosis, depression, mental illness and in the worst case scenarios, death. I appreciate the timeliness of this information for I spend a lot of time on my computer playing computer games. As such, I mostly sleep for less than three hours a day. I believe this is the reason why I feel exhausted most of the times.

Describe how we are impacted by sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation can weaken our immune systems. Individuals who sleep less may take longer to recover from an illness as opposed to individuals who get enough sleep. More so, sleep deprivation is associated with advanced respiratory diseases. Also, sleep helps in healing and rebuilding blood vessels that are constantly under pressure when we are active. Hence, sleep deprivation exposes us to cardiovascular diseases. Most importantly, sleep deprivation can lead to inattentiveness while riding a vehicle thus increasing the chances of accidents.
