Literature is a broad term that comprises of almost everything read, seen and heard. A genre is a type of art, literature or even music that is characterized by a particular style (Fowler, 1982; Fowler, 1979). In literature, genres help the audience or readers to understand the message being passed across ( Guillory, 2 013 ) . For instance, Poems, one of the genres are written in lines and stanzas and not in paragraphs. While some poems follow very strict rules , others flow freely. Poems use figurative elements like metaphors and onomatopoeia so as to emphasize on the imaginations and emotions. Poems are shorter than other genres though some may elaborately and chronologically narrate heroic deeds and various subject matters . For example, in John Milton's poem, “Paradise Lost ” the author focuses on the fall of Satan from grace and his pursuit of revenge. Fiction also uses figurative language and is any work that is not real and is used to depict possible real world issues (Fowler, 1982) . A work of fiction is more structural than poetry and is made up of sentences that make paragraph s , which are later broken into chapters. The subject matter can be anything presented in the past, present and future. Examples of fictions are legends , folk tales and fairy tales such as that of Cinderella.
The non-fiction genre, presents real-world experiences , for example in the form of a journal or a diary. This g enre uses figurative language though not as much like fiction and poetry. The pieces are written in prose and sometimes in chapters just like in fiction ( Guillory, 2 013 ) . Drama , on the other hand, is anything that can be performed . Therefore , it may contain dialogue s and stage directions. Further, works of f iction are very vital because they create fantas ies and can also keenly follow the day to day happenings. Dramatic and fiction genres help students and other learners to develop and improve their communication skills. Poetry , on the other hand, h elps in developing the imaginative and emotional power to the learners . According to (Fowler 1979), non-fiction messages and expositions help learners create diagnostic and convincing abilities. In conclusion, genres are significant in build ing a code of conduct amongst authors and keep the audience informed about the messages being passed and the topics covered .
