Motivation in a company is aimed at boosting the morale of the company employees as well as boosting the fortunes of the company. Motivation helps the organization to create team work among the different players for the successful wellbeing of the company. Motivation entails the psyching up of employees in a bid to improve their attitude as this in turn, transcends to good fortunes for the business. Having worked for the InvenSense Inc., which is an electronic company that deals with the fabrication and designing of micro-electro-mechanical systems technologies, I witnessed firsthand how motivation impacts the company as a whole. The CEO of the company together with the human resource team strived to ensure the employees were motivated by employing both theory x and y as the company’s motivation strategy. This research will look into my motivational experiences with the company I worked for, the steps the company took to motivate the employees, and interrogate whether this motivational practices mentioned had the theory x or y elements. The research will further look at how the management of company uses Maslow’s hierarchy to address the needs of the organization.

Steps taken by the management to motivate workers

The company as part of its recruitment policy, would ensure that any of the persons who were hired were smart, highly engaged, caring, and that they had the urge to change the world through their workmanship. This ensured that the company got a group of self-motivated individuals who had a set of values, which they strongly subscribed to, and this aided in the success of the business. Though not all of the employees did continue to have the same self-motivation as time went on, the company, through its hierarchy of leaders, would communicate with them as many times as possible to keep their spirits high. The company also, would motivate its employees through good pay, which sometimes translated into profit sharing; this usually would act as a very important motivator in their day to day engagements in the company.

Use of both theory X and Y

The management of the company opted to use the combination of both theory X and Y in order to achieve the best favorable results from the employees. In using theory X, the management would set goals to be met by the employees. Also, it would ensure the supervision of the employees in their respective workshops. The supervision was, however, usually on a lighter note so as not to create any anxiety among the employees as the workers already were self-motivated. Conversely, the company used to use theory Y as its most preferred motivation tool, this being seen in the way the company paid its workers through a profit sharing strategy and also, in its recruitment, where it emphasized on the recruitment only of self-motivated individuals as its employees. The company’s hierarchy also would try to communicate to the employees as many times as possible to get them motivated and to get to address any discontent that they might have had. These strategies are the key pillars of the theory Y management. The fact that the management found it comfortable to implement both theories upon its employees held the motivation of its employees in very high regard. (Barnett, 2016).

The Maslow’s hierarchy

Maslow came up with the hierarchy of needs to understand what motivates people in an organization. This was in the form of five needs that were depicted in form of a pyramid. He identified self-motivation, esteem needs, need for belonging and love, safety needs, and psychological needs as the needs comprising the hierarchy. The company’s management had identified self-motivation, belongingness, and love as well as psychological needs as their major areas of concern in the organization. The company in employing self-motivated staff, effectively did address the need for self-motivation. Additionally, the need for love and belonging was addressed by the company’s management hierarchy through proper labor compensation, exemplified by reasonable wage rates, and profit sharing, with the company management showing their concern over the company staff. The company also did address the psychological needs of the company personnel through engaging and communicating with them more often so as to boost their morale and sort any issues that otherwise, would have physiologically impacted them, leading to low returns for the company (McLeod, 2016).

Conclusion

Motivation is a very important tool that the management of a company can use to ensure that its personnel are working to the maximum potential for the benefit of the organization. My experience in the InvenSense technology company has enumerated the enormous positive impacts that a firm or organization can have when its staff has been motivated using the theories earlier mentioned.
