During world war 1, the major countries involved in the war were; Germany, Italy, England, United States, France, Russia, Austria Hungary (Tobias, 2017). It led to formation of alliances.
Germany entered the war because they wanted to encourage pan-Germanism. They allied with Austria-Hungary empire against Serbia when Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by the Serbian nationalists.
Italy allied with Germany and Austria Hungary through central powers to help fight Serbia. Additionally, some of the territories Italy wanted to have were in the possession of Serbians.
England joined as an allied power and it was angry when Germany attacked the neutral Belgium. England therefore supported Belgium.
France joined the Allied power and worked with Russia to support Serbia.
Russia joined as allies to Serbia to encourage Pan-Slavism
The United States joined in the war because the Germans refused to stop the submarine warfare that had killed many Americans.
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
During world war 2 participating countries were reacting to the devastating effects of world war 1. 50 Allied countries joined forces against German. German had experienced political and economic instability which prompted it to participate in the war.
The harsh term of the Versailles Treaty led to the rise of Hitler who was obsessed with the idea of superiority and Germany's race and he joined the war believing that it was “Lebensraum,” or living space to expand the Germany race.
The breaking of the Versailles Treaty and signing of the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, by Hitler and the Soviet leader promoted England and France to make plans of joining the war. Hitler invaded Poland and France with Britain come in support of Poland.
The United States joined to combat the Japanese aggression and after the Pearl Harbor incident, the war on Japan was declared. German and Axis powers then declared war on the United States.
