Ava DuVernay is the director of the 13th film that focuses on informing viewers about the real history of the black community. When anyone gets to watch this film (somebody that is concerned about every individual regardless of one’s race or ethnicity) the person is deemed to be filled with mixed reactions such as sadness, inspiration, repulsion, as well as anger. In my case, I am particularly saddened by the events of the film, considering I had a black American friend at the time undergoing family challenges due to racial discrimination. Focusing on the nature of the film and my own circumstance at the time of watching it, literature significantly influences perceptions about human culture.
The documentary outlays the mistreatment that the Black Americans got in a society full of Whites. The sad part is that not even the law enforcers respected the African Americans. For instance, when Officer George Zimmerman over a phone call describes Trayvon Martin, an African American as a ‘fool’, his word is a sign of disrespect for the Black community (DuVernay, 2016). One can feel inspired by such film to create a just society where all humans are equal despite their color, culture, or ethnicity.

In the film, there is no scene where the good in Blacks has been portrayed but only the mistakes of one among many that describe them as savages. A good illustration in the movie is the part that shows a black man sexually abusing a White woman (DuVernay, 2016). Such displays instill fear in the White community. However, the film does not show any soundness out of blacks such as how they served their White employers during their slavery.
In conclusion, this documentary portrays that the media influences the negative attitude that the Whites have against the Black community. Nonetheless, since they created that sense of fear in the Whites, they can still erase it by airing the good in the African American population. This media is supposed to create harmony in the justice by instilling equality. It would be best if the media portrays the good and bad in both communities so that the viewers can make a non-biased decision.
