Francine Prose appears to hold the opinion that the literature that is being taught in high school classrooms tend to be boring. In addition, she argues that the literature is irrelevant and boring. To back up the claims, the author gives the examples of the teachers who teach the book, “I Know why the Cage Bird Sings.” Furthermore, she talks about how medical students are taught by experienced doctors to acquire the skills needed to succeed in their professions. I believe that the criticism that Francine Prose gives in the book are both valid and invalid. In particular, I agree with the statement that she makes on racism and literature. She felt that some of the books such as Huckleberry Finn revolves around racism and can promote such practices in the community. Furthermore, the author makes the statement that it may be prudent to change the kind of books that the students read in high school as a way of promoting positive growth and discouraging practices such as stereotyping and racism. I also believe that some of the statements that Francine Prose makes regarding high school literature may not be valid. For instance, she appears to suggest that teachers should be blamed for the way some students behave in literature classes. Moreover, the author of the text seem to be stating that the students’ hatred for literature should be linked to the way teachers carry out their duties. Such statements are not agreeable since the role of the teacher is to guide students and not to make decision for them. Even in the literature classes, the teacher is expected to play a guiding role and help students understand what is being taught. Therefore, it may not be prudent to entirely blame the teachers for the way students behave or respond to literature.
