The Metropolitan Museum of Art (TMMOA), is the largest museum in the USA. Also known as “the met”, its address is 1000 5th Ave, New York. The museum has over one million art collections spanning over 5000 years. It is therefore rich in the collection of arts in has with regards to diversity and depth. 

Madonna and Child 

The art is a painting that was done by Giovanni di Paolo. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Arts (2019), Giovanni di Paolo was an author and lived between 1398 and 1482 in Sienna, Italy. The medium of the painting is Tempera on wood, gold ground. Moreover, the medium is also modern red glazes partly checkered in it. The scale and dimensions of the painting are painted surface 137.8 x 81.3 cm and overall 145.1 x 81.3 cm.

The painting is classified as a religious painting. As a result of this, it is clear to see that the painter is trying to communicate a religious message. To understand the message, it is important to get a comprehension of the painting portrays. It portrays a lady holding a baby whereas to children as by his said. This is a painting that is hung on the wall of Mary, and there is a man kneeling front of the painting. The cultural significance of the painting is that at the time, the people worshiped Mary. In Italy and other surrounding areas, Mary, or Madonna as she is mostly referred to as in Italy, was revered and seen as the Supreme Being (Metropolitan Museum of Arts, 2019). It, therefore, means that the people at the point in time as seen in the painting are catholic. One of the most important historical elements that are seen in the art painting is The Anatolian carpet. The carpet was one of the most valued objects then. 

Madonna of Giverny 

The art is classified as a painting. It was painted by Frederick William MacMonnies. Metropolitan Museum of Arts (2019) puts it that he was an American who lived in New York between 1863 and 1937. Fredrick did the painting in 1901. The medium through which the painting was done in oil on canvas. The dimensions and scale of the painting are 115.1 x 114.7 cm. 

To understand the message which the painter hoped to pass across, it is important to put the painting into context. According to Metropolitan Museum of Arts (2019), the painting shows a woman holding a child, whereas there are other children looking on. The woman is seated. The painting is figurative art. According to Noussair & Renneboog (2019), figurative art refers to paintings that depict true events that happened in the past. The woman in the painting is Virgin Mary whereas the child she is holding is Jesus. The painting is, therefore, a religious painting; hence, the painter is trying to pass a religious message across. Despite being a religious painting, it depicts American culture which tries to paint a picture of humbleness. This is because the painter used his children and those of his gardener as angels in the painting, hence depicting a culture that Christian is associated with being humble. Two historical elements are used in the painting. One is the circular format of the painting which is a tondo, as well as the naturalistic setting. Both these historic elements reflect the renaissance period.
