The woman in the painting is Virgin Mary whereas the child she is holding is Jesus. The painting is, therefore, a religious painting; hence, the painter is trying to pass a religious message across. Despite being a religious painting, it depicts American culture which tries to paint a picture of humbleness. This is because the painter used his children and those of his gardener as angels in the painting, hence depicting a culture that Christian is associated with being humble. Two historical elements are used in the painting. One is the circular format of the painting which is a tondo, as well as the naturalistic setting. Both these historic elements reflect the renaissance period.
