Give specific examples of how the ending of the story is foreshadowed in the story.
At the beginning of the story the reader is notified that the grandmother intuitively doesn’t want to go to Florida so as to give second thoughts to her son Bailey she shows him an article from the local daily and tells him. ‘Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is loose from the federal pen and headed toward Florida, and you read here what it says he did to these people…” The grandchildren sneer her and John Wesley says that perhaps Grandmother should just stay at home. Grandmother counteracts by asking “Yes, what would you do if this fellow, The Misfit caught you?” Eventually, the family goes to Florida and grandmother’s response to John Wesley foreshadows their encounter with the Misfit.
How is the misfit a symbol of the devil?
When the family car gets an accident the sky is explained as sunless and cloudless, this connects with the misfit who lies between evil and good, day and night but the Misfit proves to be the devils reincarnate first when he proclaims that he is not a good man after he is called so after saving the family and finally affirms his devilish nature after killing the family.

When the grandmother's head clears for an instant (paragraph 136), what does she suddenly understand?
The grandmother experiences a moment of realization and first of all sees herself and the Misfit as from a similar kinship and also ponders that she might be no better than the Misfit Himself, the Misfit affirms the interconnectedness by shooting the grandmother since he realizes they are connected in some way.
What does one learn about life or what is a theme of this story? Consider the change in the grandmother's attitude toward life vs. the Misfit's outlook on life.
Throughout the story the theme of conflict between good and evil is written all over, The Grandmother talks often about finding a good man, she even thinks tells the Misfit that he is a Goodman but kills her anyway. Bailey, on the other hand, is also not a very good man he’s unkind to the mother. There is an emphasis on goodness which is seen through grandmother’s eyes and a good man ought to be, kind and one who’s respectable.
