Politics is a dirty word to many because of the upsetting fact that it is the use of power and influence in organizations to achieve personal goals ( Nelson, & Quick, 2017). Political parameters influence social lives, organizations, company’s, individuals and groups. Power is the twin sibling to politics and if used effectively, has a positive influence on people, target groups and organizations. Human societies in the world rest on imbalances of power and politics to achieve stability ( Nelson, & Quick, 2016) . The exercise of power lies in personal interest with a central motivation. Power is hard to achieve in the absence of a particular imbalance. If an individual can compel someday to do something, then that is a type of imbalance in itself. This course was fascinating because I got to learn and relate to power and politics in my personal life. I was born a leader, and I have influenced those I have interacted with, whether in school or workplace. At the workplace, I tend to use reward power where I offer gifts, appreciation and recognize my subordinates after they achieve their set goals and targets. I reward myself too after attaining a specific purpose and it encourages me to achieve more and appreciate more.

The most valuable learning experience was how power and politics could be used together to bring a positive effect on others and the benefits it can have in organizational performance and culture. I have strong interpersonal skills with my colleagues which makes teamwork and working easy to achieve. If corporate leaders learn to recognize and balance between power and political behavior per the organization’s goals, then success is guaranteed.

In conclusion, politics is not a negative word and should not be eliminated in organizations. Instead, it should be used effectively together with power for the betterment of the organization. Reward power is the most exciting type of power in this course because I practice in real life, and it bears good fruits. This course broadened my knowledge and equipped me with skills on how to use power and politics effectively in an organization. Some imbalance must exist for power to be used.
