"Accident by Robert Rauschenberg": understanding the usage of limestone matrix

The title of the artwork is “ Accident by Robert Rauschenberg.” The artist has made use of lithograph as the medium. The dimension that features the artwork is composed of “ 38 5/16 x 27 9/16" (97.3 x 70 cm); sheet: 41 5/16 x 29 1/2" (105 x 75 cm).” The artwork is located in New York (Johnson, 2012). It is at “The Museum of Modern Art” printed in 2004 but founded by Robert Rauschenberg in 1963. 

The artwork has been crafted through restless activity by the designer. The artwork is comprised of different image assortment. The bottom right of the drawing is the Venetian artist called Giovanni Battista, and to the left side, there is a player of baseball game derived from a past printing plate. The images in the drawing comprise of painterly components of the useable printable ink that can be traced to the Abstract Expressionism brushstrokes (Lanchner, 2009). The lithographic medium that the printer used made of stone was cracked while she was printing the print. Instead of doing away with the cracked lithographic stone, Robert Rauschenberg used the cracked stone. Robert Rauschenberg placed the cracked stones' chips at the lower part of the crack making the defect the main feature that represented the print.

The role that the artwork plays is that it helps to show that different images can be combined to reveal a significant print. The artwork embraces image bifurcation that helps propel the printing edition from the cracked lithographic medium. Also, the artwork helps understand the use of the limestone matrix that is done at the printing phase in its content. The print as depicted by its name draws attention to the source material used in its creation of which is considered an accident during the process of the artist’s printing process.
