Addiction is a state where an individual can no longer be able to control certain circumstances. Most cases, the addition has been associated with drugs, and from the peer review article, it is clear that there are three types of addiction, the illness, morality and maladaptive behavior. All these are associated with the inability of an individual to respond to the positive side of life. I agree to the fact that an individual is responsible for their choices, this is because one is free to choose what to do and what not to do. According to society, it is the expectation of every individual to be morally upright. This means an individual should portray characteristics that are deemed moral by the society. Failure to that, that person will be termed as immoral, and their behaviors will not be accepted by the society.

However, according to the ways of treating addiction, punishment is not the right method. This is because it subjects the individual to more harm than good. Addiction is behavioral, that is right. Hence, it is important to understand the behavior of the addicted individual before resorting to punishment as a form of treatment. Take for example drug addiction; you find that an individual could have fallen the victim due to various circumstances. Therefore it is important to first evaluate the reasons behind the addiction so as to determine the appropriate means of treatment. Punishment is temporary because the addict can as well go back to the addiction stage after the punishment. Therefore I support the fact that the right procedure should be administered for a person who is addicted. The appropriate method should involve some stages of guiding and counseling. However, there some addictions that can be solved through punishment, take for example a child who is used to stealing, this kind of behavior deserves punishment (Thombs & Osborn 2013).
