Addiction to psychoactive drugs in the biological sense relates to genetic vulnerability whereby individuals have a genetic predisposition to fail to resist certain impulses (Wakeman & Rich, 2018). Such people are at a higher risk of getting addicted to certain psychoactive drugs due to this genetic vulnerableness. In retrospect, psychological addiction to psychoactive drugs is a phenomenon influenced by circumstances such as trauma or stress and the desire to re-do a substance for the pleasure it gives someone. Thus, addiction to psychoactive drugs is both biological and psychological phenomena

I support drug therapy as a treatment option for drug addiction. The over-dependence is managed through counseling that helps addicts to gain control over compulsive drug use. Drug therapy can also be done through pharmacotherapy and clinical case management, where addiction cases are analyzed individually and treated (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020). Similarly, drug therapy is productively done to a group of addicts who support and challenge each other hence making the recovery process quick. Individual therapy helps addicts manage conditions such as depression and anxiety commonly associated with psychoactive drug use. The significance of drug therapy is that it can combine treatments based on individuals' needs (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020).

The advantages of drug therapy for addicts include programs that engage them in productive activities that distract them from thoughts about drugs. Addicts also benefit from peer group counseling from people who understand what they are going through, and they are encouraged to become accountable, which is a primary aspect of treatment of addiction (Rowlands, Youngs & Canter, 2019). Pharmacotherapy is an essential treatment option as it aids addicts to manage their drug addiction problem. Disadvantages of drug therapies include high costs, which make them inaccessible to people. Addicts can also relapse after their therapy sessions are over because they are not getting close supervision as before.
