My neighbor is a single dad with four kids. His firstborn daughter is my friend, and we go to school together every morning. My other siblings are also friends with the girl’s other siblings. However, she is not my source of conflict; her father is. Her dad greets my family and his other neighbors so warmly that it cheers us all up. He is also a hardworking man who provides everything for his children. Moreover, he volunteers on weekends at the local community center. My friend’s dad has a weird character that keeps me wondering how a person can have so many shades.

He beats up his children at the slightest provocation at home, and it gets worse where he subjects them hefty punishment. While parents can punish their children as a form of correction, it should never skirt the boundaries of assault. His way of punishment is so severe that his children are never late, never take friends at home and never play. I find it difficult to understand how a devout Christian could have such odd behavior. At other times, we can hear him shouting and cursing his children with such vehemence that I even wonder whether they are his. However much, I try to be mindful of the whole situation. I cannot quite grasp a way around the entire thing.

For a man who behaves straightly and whose devotion to the church and community service are essential, his behavior towards his children does not align with my expectations. I would expect that if one can love and show gentleness to others, such kindness should begin at home; after all, charity begins at home. There could be many reasons that have caused my neighbor to behave the way he does towards his children, such as the death of his wife or work-related issues. However, I still struggle to find answers for the disconnect, which will enable me to settle my confused feelings.
