Personality disorder refers to a mental health condition which affects the way a person feels, perceives, relates to others, and thinks. Antisocial personality disorder defines a person who has a tendency to violate and disregard the privileges and feelings of those who are around them. Antisocial personality disorder can also be characterized by long patterns of standing. Individuals having antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) tend to have no or little empathy towards those around them, and for the purposes of satisfying their own needs, they see no harm in breaking or bending the laws (Bressert, 2018). Some of its symptoms include persistent lying, arrogance, impulsiveness, reckless, and disrespect among others. Antisocial personality disorder is a sure threat to an individual and the well-being of those around them since individuals have no sense of calmness, they tend to enjoy violations more than any other thing which may earn them a criminal record. Diagnosing is usually based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders, which helps health professionals assess patients.

Just like any other condition, antisocial personality disorder has a number of symptoms which can be identified with an individual. A person with the antisocial disorder would in most cases exhibit the following symptoms. Usually, they are impulsive; they always fail to plan for the future. Then there is deceitfulness which is because they lie repeatedly, or conn others for their personal pleasure or profit. Failing to follow the social norms, for instance, their tendency of not respecting the law, engaging in behaviors which are unlawful thus grounds for getting them behind bars. Another symptom is that there is an elevated level of aggressiveness and irritability since they tend to have no or very little feelings thus get in physical assaults or fights most of the time. Recklessness is another thing having very little to keep in mind about their safety and that of the others. Then there is consistent irresponsibility which can be noted through their frequent failure in sustaining consistency in their work. Antisocial personality disorder can also be noted through the absence of remorse.

The antisocial personality disorder, according to the DSM criteria, the disorder has several personalities. The first one is poor interpersonal and individual functioning. Individuals tend to have a very hard time function normally like others. In addition, interaction is difficult. Their poor functioning can be noted in their failure of planning ahead. They lack internal motivation which would help in following up with the cultural ethics, social rules or laws. Interpersonal functioning can be noted where there is no empathy or lacking intimacy with people. The second one is disinhibition and antagonism which are two precise personality traits. Antagonism is evident through the hostile, callous, manipulative and deceitful character towards others. Deceitfulness presents itself in recurrent lies they tell to others as well as exaggerating about themselves. The third personality is consistent behaviors across situation and time. The problems that they have with the interpersonal and personal functioning happen throughout in all situations in their life. Their problems seem to stay in certain circumstances or for certain periods (Haelle, 2018).

The media is considered as the eyes, ears, and speaker of the public, but according to the U.S. health news, media misrepresents different kinds of mental illnesses (Zainabpsyc, 2018). Therefore, the media is an unreliable source for seeking knowledge of mental disorders. The DSM-5 has placed Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, Kleptomania, and Pyromania into a chapter called Disruptive, Impulse-Control, and Conduct Disorders. The main reason for this is because they are disorders which have remained frequently undiagnosed, inadequately treated, and poorly understood (Iliades, 2014). Putting them together would, therefore, help providers realize how common they are and how debilitating and extremely destructive they can be for families, communities and individuals.

Antisocial personality disorder is a sure threat to an individual and the well-being of those around them since individuals have no sense of calmness, they tend to enjoy violations more than any other things which may earn them a criminal record. Some of its symptoms include persistent lying, arrogance, impulsive, reckless, and disrespectful among others. It is of great importance to seek help in a case such symptoms represent themselves.
