Denial is Freud's first defense mechanism that entails a lack of acceptance for realities that are not pleasant, the scholar also identifies displacement as a defense mechanism; it involves diverting of inappropriate behavior or responses to parties with lesser threats. Projection is another defense mechanism; it entails the act of developing attributes towards others. Rationalization is Freud's defense mechanism that enables them to replace unacceptable reasons with acceptable ones in explaining their actions ( S pielman et al., 2014). People also implement reaction formation as a defense mechanism that involves accepting beliefs against personal views; it aims to avoid anxiety ( S pielman et al., 2014). Regression is another mechanism that aids in avoiding stress by doing things acceptable for lesser stages of development. People who use repression as another mechanism implement it through avoiding painful thoughts; they may also divert such thought to acceptable social styles to result in sublimation.

My life experiences have enabled me to use two of the above-stated defense mechanism; they include sublimation and repression. When my first employer reprimanded me while at work, I developed fear and became anxious because I thought I would lose the job. The case made me walk back home as a form of exercise that would enable me to avoid fear. I also remember when my best friend and I were victims of a road accident that entailed a head-on collision. We were, however, lucky that the airbags in the vehicle ensured we were not fatally hurt. Since that time, I wouldn't say I like thinking about the memories and how it affected the other vehicle's occupants.

In my first event where I was afraid of losing my job, I could use exercise as a sublimation form that led me to avoid stress and keep fit. Walking back home served as an exercise for losing excessive calories from my body. The reduction of stress also enabled me to avoid harmful effects such as being emotional towards other people. After implementing repression, I was unable to remember the event for some time. Lack of remembrance was not of many benefits because it led me to develop the natural fear of accidents whenever I drive on highways.
