What makes psychology a science?

The scientific status of any activity in the society is determined through assessment of the method used in the process of investigation. Some people might consider that activity is considered scientific through determining the person conducting the investigation, time research was done, and the studies conducted but it is not true. Psychology is considered to be scientific as the psychologists observe the empirical method in the process of conducting an investigation. All the research studies related to science are conducted through the empirical method, which emphasizes the precise and objective measurement (Davis et al., 2017). Psychology and social or behavioral sciences like politics, economics, anthropology, and sociology are not precise considering their measurements as compared with those of physics, chemistry, and biology. However, psychology is referred to as scientific due to the empirical evidence used by the psychologists in the process of conducting an investigation.

The definition of psychology was changed from the study of the mind to the science of behavior. The change was necessitated by the emphasis on the empirically observable procedures, which were not possible, as the mind would not be observed directly. External characteristics like talking, movement and other activities can be directly observed and carefully measured through the psychological test (Davis et al., 2017). Internal thoughts and emotions of an individual cannot be directly observed forcing the scientists to adopt empirical method while studying behaviors.
