Ariana Grande commenced her 2019 Sweetener World Tour in Albany New York with a concert that demonstrated her prowess as an artist. The concert included Normani and Social House as her opening acts with Ariana following with her mind blowing performance. The concert took place on the 18th of March 2019 at the Times Union Center in Albany New York. The stage was set with two large orbs that looked like the moon. One of the orbs hung from the ceiling while the other was placed at the center of the stage’s backdrop. The stage was entirely set in a less distracting manner to ensure that all the concentration was on Ariana and her performance. It nonetheless reflected a cosmic visual tone that matched well with the artist’s outfit and costumes.
She performed numerous of her hit songs with the a cappella of her song “Raindrops” setting the stage for the rest of her performance. She also performed “God Is A Woman” on a platform that rose through an opening that was at the center of the main stage. The other performances of the night included many if not all of her hit songs such as “Bad Idea”, “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored”, “R.E.M.”, “Be Alright”, “Sweetener”, “Successful”, “Side to Side”, “Bloodline” and “7 Rings” (Spanos, 2019). Other songs on her playlist were “Love Me Harder”, “Breathin”, “Needy”, “Fake Smile”, “Make Up”, “Right There”, “You’ll Never Know”, “Break Your Heart Right Back” and “NASA” (Spanos, 2019). She further kept the crowd singing along to other hit singles like “Goodnight n Go”, “In My Head”, “Everytime”, “One Last Time”, “The Light Is Coming”, “Into You”, “Dangerous Woman”, “Break Free” and “No Tears Left to Cry” (Spano, 2019). She dedicated her encore to her sensational hit single “Thank U, Next”. All of her selections were mind-blowing and extremely entertaining. However the one I loved most and felt was entertaining for me was her performance of “God Is A Woman”. I felt her whistling lengthy tone that I often feels sets her apart as an artists and this stood out for me.

Her style of performance was a combination of the direct and call-and-response styles. She would deeply engage in her music and lyrics and it was possible for one to identify the emotions she exhibited. During such instances, she would directly sing to the audience as her fans cheered her on and some sung along to her music. There were instances where she would call on the audience and they would uniformly respond to her music. There was an instance when her microphone was not working well and it went completely off. The audience gladly sung “Thank U Next” until her microphone was okay and she was ready to perform. There were no distractions for me as I was fully focused on her performance like everyone else was. I am a huge fan of Ariana and her music kept me engaged the entire time she was performing.
I believe the performance was successful despite the insignificant problem she encountered with her microphone. The costumes were great, her voice was amazing and the organization of the entire performance was successful. I appreciate how she maintained a connection with the audience while managing to maintain the choreography with her dancers. It is also commendable how she included other rising stars like Normani and Soul House. The problem with the microphone may have resulted in a bit of a distraction to her flow and her organizers needed to check on that to prevent it from happening during her subsequent concerts. I enjoyed the concert and would attend any other event that includes her.
