The Romans adapted numerous ideas and traditions from the Greeks and the Etruscans, these two were their neighbors. The Etruscan settled on a land north of Rome identified as Etruria and ruled most of northern and central Italy as well as the town of Rome. The Etruscan influence on ancient Roman culture was huge and It was from them that the Romans inherited many of their artistic traditions and culture (Lister, 2020). Through Etruscan Engineering, the Romans were able to become great builder as they learned a lot regarding the science of building. The Romans borrowed the arch and cuniculus from the Etruscan structures. They used the arches to build public works that included stadiums, bridges, and aqueducts.

The Romans were pioneers of the wide-scale use of hydraulic cement; they mixed it with lime and rubble as mortar for binding stones. The roman concrete had proven to be extremely strong and could cover great distances when shaped into vaults or archenemies. Compared to the other building materials that the Romans had used, concrete proved to be more durable. The concrete was cheaper since it did not enquire skilled labor, offered great flexibility in molding spaces, and was much faster to construct with. Samples of Roman concrete that have come down to modern times in buildings are harder than many natural rocks would be after so many years of exposure.

The Romans adapted the Greek orders and added two orders of their own. These new orders were modifications to the Greek orders. In the textbook terminology the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders were challenging to define through pictures. To identify them it is important to note that the Doric orders were orders for the ground floor; the Corinthian was used for the top story, and the ionic for the middle story. The tholos was a round building at Olympia of the iconic order with Corinthians orders in its interior columns.
