Summary

The article used to carry out the analysis is titled Retreat of the Brexiteers by the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal. The major geopolitically relevant issue that the author is writing about is Britain’s departure from the European Union, otherwise referred to as Brexit. The main concern with the article is that the greater economic freedom promised by the Brexit may not be met with Brexit supporters surrendering halfway through the talks (“The Editorial Board”, 2018). A similar article to the one that was published was from Sky News dealt with the disappointments in Brexit talks after the government failed to offer real changes or compromises when dealing with the talks in order to end the Brexit stalemate (“Brexit crisis: Labour 'disappointed' by talks as EU offers 'flextension'”, 2019). Based on the opinion piece and the article selected, it appears that the main issue that needs addressing is an agreement regarding the nature of compromises that should be undertaken during Brexit to ensure that the deal delivers the promise of greater economic freedom without many compromises.

Evaluation

The core argument derived from reading the peace is that the Brexit talks may not promise the economic freedom that was once promised to supporters of the Brexit deal. The opinion piece differs from factual reporting because it takes a stand regarding the issues that have been raised. The levels of analysis vary between the individual level when discussing opinions of various leaders, the state-level when discussing the state of the UK, and the international level when discussing the relationship between the UK and other countries such as the U.S. The dominant theoretical approach is that of realism which is based on power-seeking and national interests (Mingst et al., 2018). The opinion piece observes that Britain’s economy should thrive when leaders and voters take the opportunity to lower taxes and move away from pointless EU rules in order to attract investment.

Analysis

The international organization being considered in the given scenario is the European Union. International organizations have a role in creating a habit of corporation among the member states, fostering economic development and handling problems that could occur within the states effectively. Based on the opinion piece, the EU is not meeting its responsibilities. It appears that the EU is not doing this as there are pointless EU rules that do not actively attract investment. However, the EU offers several economic benefits to its members which Britain would lose by leaving the EU. The level of analysis is that of a state level and the approach should be that of the radical perspective which assumes the primacy for economics (Gilman, 2015). Based on the analysis the opinion that the EU has not met its responsibilities because it has not supported Britain would suffer economically in Brexit.

Reflection

The argument presented in the opinion piece argues in favor of increased international security. International security would go beyond military security and focuses on the realization of peace, economic security, and even food security. Food security was proposed through farm subsidies while economic security was proposed by having taxes as low as 15%. In my opinion, all these initiatives would be effective in solving the current situation with Brexit. Solving the current crisis would realize peace and economic development that fosters international security.
