NAEYC Standard 7: Families
The program establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with each child’s family to foster children’s development in all settings. These relationships are sensitive to family composition, language, and culture. To support children’s optimal learning and development, programs need to establish relationships with families based on mutual trust and respect, involve families in their children’s educational growth, and encourage families to fully participate in the program.
The aforementioned standard is most suitable for solving the current scenario as it centers on the place that families and their cultures hold in determining programs that children are exposed to while in the learning environment. The problem present in the scenario is that the child’s father is not comfortable with the child playing in the housekeeping area or with dolls. Such an occurrence is founded in a standard that focuses on families and cultures in their place in the child’s learning environment.

The first step would be to inquire from Mr. Jones which type of play Caleb can engage in to ensure that the child can play while staying away from what is discouraged by his father. The second step would be during the meeting and I would inquire about the family culture and the type of play Caleb is culturally allowed to be part of. This is because I would not want to make uninformed assumptions about their culture and expose Caleb to forms of play that are still not permitted by his father. I would then research on family and culturally sensitive types of play that the child can engage in and learn how I can incorporate this into Caleb’s playtime and overall learning experience. Finally, I would introduce this form of play to him as it would merge well with his family’s needs and those of his culture.
Ethical Scenario
During play time outside, child A gets into an accident and injures their knee. There is slight bleeding and the injury would require first aid and a check-up from the nurse to ensure that the child will be okay and that there is no infection. Nonetheless, A’s parents revealed during his admission that their religion does not allow them to expose their children to any form of modern medication as it would corrupt them. They mention that they have their ways of addressing health related issues in their children. If the child receives first aid, the parents will know that they were exposed to some form of modern treatment. If they do not get first aid and a check-up, there is no certainty that they will be okay.
