The initial response that I got after reading the story of Laura and Gabriella is concern about children mistreatment and negligence. Child neglect has been an ongoing issue in society with no person to make them pay for the mistakes. The NASW Code of Ethics is meant to guide the social workers on their duties of promoting the welfare of human beings and empowering them, especially the oppressed, vulnerable, and those living in poor conditions. The NASW values that are not upheld and can adversely affect the Sandoval family are social justice, competence, service, and integrity. Some of the NASW Code of Ethics principles that are evident at St. Paul are the importance of human relationships and dignity and worth of the people. Commitment to the clients can also be seen in some cases, and that promotes competence.
There are various interventions at micro, mezzo, and macro levels that need to be implemented for better services to be found. It starts with continuous training of the social workers to ensure that they can handle different families despite their differences in culture and beliefs. When hiring social workers, it is essential to make sure that they are from diverse backgrounds. In that way, they will have knowledge of the customs of different families and ensure that they are achieved. As Laura’s mentor, I would ensure that I follow all the ethical rules as established by NASW to guide my steps. It would be essential since it would help me in creating better relationships with my clients and ensure that the dignity of each person is maintained. It will also help in promoting social justice and ensure that the welfare of children is maintained.
