The comedy “blockers” is about three parents Mitchell, Lisa and Hunter who try to block their daughters from having sex during their prom night party, despite Hunter’s initial hesitance. The parents find out that their daughters, Kayla, Julie and Sam, who are best friends, have a sex pact to lose their virginity during this party, after Julie leaves a chat group open in her laptop and during this funny scene try to decipher the emojis. In the process, the audience gets to find out about the struggles of each parent. Lisa is a struggling single mother, Mitchell an overprotective sports fanatic father while Hunter is a divorcee after a humiliating divorce from Sam’s mother. In the movie, the struggles of parenting are evident as Lisa has issues with her daughter who is leaving for college and intends to attend UCLA rather than Lisa’s option of the University of Chicago. However, the girls later decide not partake in the activity; Julie and Austin decide to take their time as they are in love, Kayla bonds with her father as she explains to him that she can protect herself as he had taught her and Sam opens up to her father about being gay.

The main theme in the movie “blockers” is love; in friendships and family. The depiction of love runs through the whole movie in regards to the friendships between the parents and their children and the girls. The first instance where the depiction of love is the parents taking the girls to school for the first time in elementary school. The girls immediately become friends as their parents are watching and at this moment, Hunter jokes upon the realization that the parents will now have to become friends. From this point on, the bond they create emanates from a loving perspective that they have for their daughters. Additionally, when the girls form a pact to lose their virginity, Sam decides to join them in order to share the experience with her friends despite the fact that she is gay and is more interested in another girl, Marcie from her school. Kayla on the other hand, is more adventurous and decides to engage in sex with her date, Connor. The parents also love their daughters to the extent that the spy on them and decide to stop the girls from having sex and perpetuating the stereotypes. This depicts their weaknesses and strengths as characters that are willing to go beyond due to their shared love for their daughters. For example, after realizing about the pact, Hunter shows his objections but joins in after remembering her daughter Sam forcing herself to kiss Chad. In the family perspective also, Kayla talks to her father about him being overprotective after throwing Connor through the wall. She tells him that she can protect herself and that he, Mitchell, has taught her all the lessons she needs. Lisa’s love for her daughter is also depicted when she after smothering her daughter, she finally decides to let her, Julie be and sneaks out of the hotel room after realizing how much Julie and Austin love each other.
In “Blockers”, the director uses the characters to express and protrude emotions, and comedy. The acting is good with characters like Mitchell (John Cena), who is a well-built, strong, person but gets emotional after Hunter asks if they want to get a beer. The acting portrays the emotional traumas of parenthood very well. This performance plays well and the audience is set to appreciate the movie since it is not all fun and games. The actors portray their strengths in their various roles, in their lives bringing the comical sides of the struggles. Additionally, the cinematography of the movie is more of blocking since it is character motivated. In this perspective, the camera rolls in a way as to show the emotional, physical and mental responses of the characters eventually showing their strengths and weaknesses.
The values in the movie “Blockers” are an important aspect to consider. First is the intrinsic value of the movie. Besides its outward nature of comedy, the movie has some key values it depicts like stereotyping of high school senior girls. The notion is that after the prom night dance, most teenagers usually have sex and most girls lose their virginity at this period. This is depicted by the pact that the girls make to have sex after their prom. However, in the end we realize that the girls do not actually engage in the activity. Additionally, in this movie, the idea is that it is time to stop that narrative and parents have had enough. Secondly, the artistic value is worth appreciation. The idea of sex and its variations is a subject many do not discuss, since most people do not discuss sexuality in a serious manner, this film alludes to the idea of sexuality rather in a comical point of view. In illustration, when Sam does not “come out” to anyone about her sexuality but in the end after telling her father, Hunter, and then her best friends, they take it well and are supportive. Blockers’ instruction value is to both parents and teenagers. When a parent raises their child in the right way and openly discussing what to expect, the child learns how to behave, morally and physically. For example, when Kayla tells her dad, Mitchell that she does not need his protection anymore as he has taught her how. Finally, it is the ethical value of the film that the writers and cast have alluded to through-out the movie. The idea that actions have consequences brings out the ethical value in “Blockers.” Spying on your children is morally wrong and the fact that the girls in the movie are self-aware and woke.
In conclusion, I believe this raunchy comedy has lesson to teach the audience if one watches its value to society. It shows how people have evolved and do not abide to the stereotypes. It also proves that the problem with putting labels on a particular group of people is not only wrong but the generalization or shoe does not always fit in everyone. Through the themes of love in friendship and family, to the lessons on sexuality and acceptance despite everyday struggles of parenthood and becoming self-aware and maintaining certain perceptions, this comedy film is a must watch.
