A good number of Americans; approximately more than 30 percent of adults and about 12 percent of children use health care approaches developed outside of mainstream Western, or conventional, medicine (NCCIH, 2016). Some decide to use different forms of medicine together with other conventionally approved medicine in what is considered to be a complementary approach while others use other medicine in place of the conventional ones in what is known as an alternative approach. This paper will discuss the five domains in which the complementary and alternative medicine are grouped into and further discuss hate crimes as one category of violence and the relevant preventive strategies.

The National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) groups complementary and alternative medicine ( CAM) into five different domains namely; Manipulative and body-based practices, Energy medicine, Mind-body medicine, Biologically based practices and Whole medical systems.

Manipulative and body-based practices

The first domain includes those practices that are based on the manipulation or body-part movements. This process involves the help of a trained personnel or can be performed personally after having gone through the guidelines and requirements of the procedure. A good example of this domain includes massages and other relaxation techniques such as body work.

Energy medicine

This domain relies heavily on the use of energy fields, for instance, magnetic body fields. These energies usually have the ability to penetrate the human body. A good example of this domain includes acupuncture and acupressure.

Mind-body medicine

Mind-body medicine employs the use of techniques that enhance the mind’s ability to affect various bodily functions and even symptoms for example psychoneuroimmunology.

Biologically based practice

This is one of the most controversial domains of CAM therapies. This is due to the availability of many options made available by this technique and several claims made about its side effects. Substances derived from nature such as herbs are mostly used in doses outside the conventional forms of medicine.

Whole medical systems

This domain is built on theory and practices that have evolved throughout the years due to constant use in the medical approach.

Hate crimes

Hate crime is one of the notable types of violence in the United States. Like all violent behaviors, it results in injuries and hurting the victims. There are several risk factors associated with this crime including anger, substance abuse, influence from the media inter alia. People who tend to get involved in hate crimes are more likely to be abusing some form of substance or have anger issues resulting to their aggressive behavior. Hate crimes are so serious and may result in other forms of crime such as rape, torture and even murder. Thus, there is a great need to employ certain preventive strategies to combat the spread of hate crimes. These methods include discovering the various risk factors associated with hate crimes early enough and subjecting it to psychological treatment. Moreover, policies against discrimination can be enforced to offer strict punishment to offenders.

Conclusion

CAM therapies can be helpful despite the fact that a lot of controversy surrounds it. The different domains can assist patients on their recovery paths in ways which other conventional forms of medicine wouldn’t have, for instance, acupuncture and therefore CAM therapies should be encouraged. Hate crimes, on the other hand, is a serious vice which should be condemned and addressed early on to protect people's lives and well-being.
