The child development stage that I am going to focus on is early childhood, which starts from birth to when the child is about eight years old. I developed an interest in this age because early childhood is the most critical stage of growth in all areas of child development. This area is of concern to me because it lays the foundation for the child’s future growth and learning. According to research, learning begins at infancy, and this is long before the child begins formal education and continues throughout their life. Therefore, the success or failure of parent interventions at this stage have lasting effects on learning and motivation (Moreno, 2015) .

Speech and language comprehension are vital in the development of young children as it provides them with opportunities to engage in social interaction and also express themselves. Speech and language play an essential role in the behavioral, social, cognitive, and emotional development of children (Moreno, 2015) . Speech and language development disorders may have severe and lasting impacts on the child’s psychology, and cognitive development for it will make it difficult for children to learn (Conti-Ramsden & Durkin, 2015) . In speech and language development, parents may notice that their children have problems with the following:

Communicating their thoughts using language. The reason for this could be due to the child’s inability to put words together, not knowing the words to use or knowing the words to use, but s/he is not able to express them (Conti-Ramsden & Durkin, 2015) .

Speech difficulties. When children may have difficulties in making sentences or forming specific words correctly (Conti-Ramsden & Durkin, 2015) .

Parents should know that they qualify for special education services and early intervention programs by the state if their children are experiencing developmental delays or disabilities (Allen & Marshall, 2010) . Early intervention programs offered by the federal government focus on helping children learn and develop new skills during their first three years of life, such as communication, cognitive, social, and physical skills (Allen & Marshall, 2010) .
