Scenario 1

The teacher first of all is very warm with her approach to teaching and interacting with the children and most of the time she has a smile on her face. This gesture warms the learners to her and they get quite comfortable yet respectful while participating in class. The gesture also allows the children to open up especially to those who seemed a bit shy at the beginning of the session. A noticeable factor at the start of class was the fact that the teacher asked for every learner to greet one another. This is supposed to make the children comfortable with one another and it is of help especially when it gets to the group discussions segment.

The organization set up of the classroom, the instructor’s mode of delivery, and relationship between the students and students with the teacher are endeared towards fostering positive learning among the students. The grade one classroom set up you notice that is quite different from the other grades. The spatial arrangement of the furniture, the proximity of the learners to the teacher ensures minimal distraction and enhanced concentration. The use of props and charts enhances visual delivery. This is supposed to ensure that the learners have a grasp of what is being presented to them and that the teacher has a relationship with every learner.

The physical setup of the classroom has been made to ensure that the children are fully attentive throughout the day. One section of the classroom had the student’s furniture while there were beddings on the opposite section. The teacher stated that having the learners move from their usual spots to a different one breaks monotony which in turn increases attentiveness and creates more excitement for them.

What was noted as well was that every time a learner contributed to a question, the teacher encouraged the class to contribute to the child’s success by clapping for them. This is supposed to motivate the other learners to participate and the will also receive the same reaction.

Scenario 2

In one instance, a section of the students seemed to distance themselves from another. This group of students did not want the other group to participate in a class activity equally, probably because they felt superior to the others. This is a form of bias and stereotyping demonstrated by the students. A classroom can be subject to bias just as any other environment and some factors can contribute to bias whether knowingly or unknowingly. Bias can occur on the premise of gender, religion, race, disability, social class among other factors. The teacher can also show bias by favoring other students. It is therefore essential to lay out strategies that would encourage an anti-bias environment in the classroom.

I would ensure that every child participates in class. This can be done such that, if a question is asked, a learner does not raise their hand, instead the teacher systematically selects the person to answer. This would ensure that every child has participated in class at the end of the day and it would also ensure that everyone is paying attention. The teacher has to inform the children that they are all different and that no learner’s difference will make them superior or inferior to the other. This can be done by teaching the children about each of their differences and what makes each one of them special. An assignment can be given to them to look into their backgrounds and what they think makes them special. The teacher can also go ahead and do the same. Children learn a lot from what they see and the burden of responsibility will lie on the teacher to prove that the classroom is anti- bias.

The teacher should apply a strategic measures that does not promote bias by ensuring that the learners interchangeably interact with one another. This can be done by changing their seat partners every now and then, and the same can also be done when it comes to group discussions.

Scenario 3

I observed that there was diversity in cultural, racial, level of activity, and level of understanding among the students in the classroom. Every classroom is different but the values at the end of the day have to be the same because the purpose is also the same. Employing certain measurements in the classroom environment allows for progress between the children in class and the whole school in general.

The classroom environment should first of all ensure that there is diversity and this can be done in the enrollment process. Different races should especially be incorporated in the classroom because this is the first thing that someone notices when they walk in the class. Having one race only in a classroom can lead to bias claims even if that is not the intention. The learners also have to understand the importance of diversity and should be allowed to celebrate one another in equal measure.

In any classroom, all the learners will have different capabilities and strengths in different areas. Therefore, the teachers have ensured that they employ formative assessment in their teaching. This method of teaching ensures that every child is taught differently in accordance to their capability. There were certain learners who grasped what was taught faster than the rest and the teacher did not have to focus much on them. There were also others who had difficulties in understanding so the teacher used more time and visuals on them. This method makes certain that at the end of the day, every child is catered for and leaves the classroom having learnt more than before.

For grade one learners, their attention span is usually not as high, therefore, play is incorporated in between their classes as a way to refresh them and also give them a chance to interact with one another. There are several options, from indoors to outdoor activities and when this is done, they learn more than what they would have if the play sessions were not incorporated.
