Code switching, also known as language alternation, is when a person alternates between two or more languages or a variety of languages in the middle of a single conversation. In most occasions, the person also incorporates different elements of each of the languages as they speak. A common example is when phrases like “y’all” or “kna’mean” are used in place of “you all” or “you know what I mean” by African Americans.
The two videos have opened up my mind to several different perspectives related to code switching. After watching them, I came to appreciate the important role that language plays in the society. Not only does it unify people but also acts as a show of the cultural diversity.

I have also learnt to accept people the way they are. The choices people make in life do not define who they are. Just because people decide to live differently, in ways that do not conform to the societal norms, does not mean that they should be judged differently.
Stereotyping is an enemy of the society. As much as it is difficult not to stereotype subconsciously, it should not be used against individuals as most of the stereotypes do not apply to a large portion of the targeted population.
I share the same sentiments as Chandra Arthur hence would relate more to her video. Personally, I have experienced situations in which I had to code switch just to get through the ordeal. Most of my friends have gone through the same experience. Seemingly, code switching has become a way of life for most individuals as it ensures survival in certain situations. For instance, I was once randomly stopped by the police and I am sure that it is the concept of code switching that got me through the affliction.
