A college education is a dream of many young people who desire to build their knowledge base and improve their skills through education. Acquiring this level of education is beneficial not only to the individual but also the entire society because of having an educated workforce. To acquire this education and skills, however, the students need to pay some tuition and other facility fees. Keeping in mind the involvedness and the importance of college education, its provision should not be free.

First, the quality of the education offered in the colleges can only be assured when the students pay for it. They will be in a position to question why they are being offered that which does not tally with their money. In such a case the college managements and tutors will strive to provide to their best and reciprocate the investment that the students make in their college education.

Free college education would burden the taxpayer. Hence the students should pay on their own. It is clear that by providing free college education, the government would be forced to increase its tax rate, which would not augur well with the country’s taxpayers.

Thirdly, it may lead to the collapse of private institutions. This is because everyone would scramble for the free college education offered by the government. As a result, the government will lose a great percentage of revenue that would be collected from these institutions.

It is clear that providing free education will come with more disadvantages that good. There will be a lack of seriousness both on the side of the educators and the students. Considerations can only be made for the very vulnerable students to be sponsored fully by the government. Otherwise, students should be left to pay for their college education.
