Communication is an essential part of any organization as it allows proper handling of tasks. Communication, especially during hiring and firing, is critical in that it communicates what is expected of an employee as they join the organization, or the factors contributing to the termination of an employment contract. An employer is at-will to fire an employee based on reasons termed as legal and non-personal and is required to handle themselves in a manner displaying preparation, professionalism, and compassion.

In the event whereby an employee is not following the guidelines instituted for proper workplace conduct, an employer could fire the employee from unethical conduct (Urhuogo, 2010). Unethical behavior is displayed in instances whereby an employee conducts business operations outside the set guidelines. Such a violation may have consequences on both the individual and the organization, hence serving as a reason for termination.

Another reason for termination would be the incompatibility with the company’s culture, which in turn affects the employee’s work output (Urhuogo, 2010). An organization’s code of conduct informs its organizational culture. The compatibility of employees with the culture is essential in ensuring favorable work output. Therefore, failure to adhere to the culture may prove difficult in achieving work output, hence serving as a reason for termination.

There is a procedure to be followed when firing an employee. The employer is required to plan for the termination in a manner that will cause minimum office disruption, hence placing the company's interests first (Grote, 2016). For instance, firing an employee in the afternoon is better than in the morning because most co-workers would have already left the office. Secondly, an employer is required to have legal and right reasons for firing an employee, to avoid accusations of personal grudges (Grote, 2016). It is advisable to have another employee as a witness in case of any legal issues arising from the termination. After breaking the termination news to the employee, an employer should finish graciously by appreciating the employee’s efforts in the company.

In conclusion, employers and managers are allowed to fire employees based on the right reasons, following a procedure for the termination. Unethical conduct and incompatibility with the company’s culture are some of the reasons for termination. A step by step guide is used during the actual termination to ensure a smooth running of the process, despite firing being a daunting task.
