This week’s content has been especially close to heart as I have gradually realized that a few experiences I have had are well described in what we learnt. I volunteered in a local organization a few months ago and had the opportunity to experience some of these aspects of communication first hand. One encounter played a significant role in displaying how communication barriers can hinder progress in the workplace. We often planned the entire week on Monday mornings. Every volunteer would gather in the meeting room to deliberate, bring forth ideas, raise complaints and help plan how we would all conduct the entire week. The leadership position was rotational meaning everyone in the group would become a leader at a given point. The group leader for this day was somewhat detached from the rest of us. I felt like he was a bit anxious, inaudible and kept facing away from his audience.
These aspects of his communication style made it somehow heard to get what he was putting across. I believe that emotional disconnects were interfering were the big interferences. Specifically, he did not connect with his audience as he would face away from us as he talked. Further, I believe that he may have been shy or was communicating in front of an audience for the first which is why he was anxious and inaudible. From this week’s content, I have learned that such a barrier would have been solved by the rest of us being more involved in what we were discussing. The leader would have been more at ease if we contributed more and conducted it as a discussion involving all of us and not just one that he acted as the leader and we followed. I also believe that with continued exposure to such environments, the leader will eventually get used to communicating with audiences and his message delivery will improve.
