Employment/Independent Living (Adult Services)

The first community resource dedicated to the problem of employment and other options for the families with a disabled student is Autism Speaks. Its URL is https://www.autismspeaks.org . The target audience of this website is adult family members, mostly parents who want to assist their disabled children in finding the most suitable career. The site carefully explores employment and some other options for special needs students after their graduation. Its goal is to develop and implement a plan to secure employment. To do so, this community offers a range of activities (internships, volunteer opportunities, and various job games). There are four basic sections: families & adults, research, advocated, and get involved. The purpose of the first section is to explore efficient autism technologies, apps, suggest that every parent should use a guide to understand this disability better, and offer other adult-oriented services. Second section allows discovering grand programs, corresponding programs, learning policies, and reading blogs/news on the issue of interest. Third, a visitor can learn what kind of initiatives government and other institutions take to improve the quality of services for young adults suffering from autism. Finally, any user may get involved through becoming a partner, blogger, or signing up to the investment charity programs. The site may vary depending on the age user selects in the corresponding window. It also serves as a great source of general information.

Virginia Commonwealth University has prepared a great solution in the shape of Center on Transition Innovations. Its home page is located at https://centerontransition.org . The website is useful for the grown-ups who are about to finish their higher education and start searching for job opportunities. The service briefly covers housing, personal care, transportation, and social life. Still, the primary focus is to assist young adults, especially those who experience some problems with mental and physical health, in deciding on their further career. Independent living skills are extremely important in all life aspects, so that’s what the site is about. As for the question of employment, it shares useful job tips, free training programs, self-assessment, and information on assistive technology. Every aspect is observed from the side of disabled young adult. A special attention is paid to the disability right movement.

Economic Services/Financial supports

Arizona Department of Economic Security is my first destination. This community operates on the governmental level. Website’s URL is https://des.az.gov . It covers a broad audience: from investors who experience difficult times because of the financial crisis to the families facing serious social and economic issues. Single-parent families, homeless people, divorced men and women, and children with disabilities can all find support and useful information on this site. In our case, the audience is disabled young adults and their family members who are looking for some financial support. The list of services on this website includes two categories of our interest: Child & Family and Disabilities. The key focus of the community resource is to help residents of Arizona achieve their potential via proper care for the vulnerable and those with special needs. Speaking about particular actions, ADES delivers food to the poor or disabled children, provides medical and social benefits for families with special needs children, pay for trainings, and lend money. Development, early intervention, and all legal issues regarding disabilities are also under ADES competence.

The second source for this category is represented by the Money Advice Service. This one is located at https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk . The target audience consists of the British grown-ups who have at least one disabled family member. This community has a special loyalty program for parents with a disabled child or adolescent. The primary focus is to guarantee state support which has to be claimed first. With the minimum of documents, it is easy to prove the young adult has some mental or physical disorders. The website contains a detailed description of disability benefits such as motability scheme, housing benefits, help with paying off taxes, salaries, and poor weather conditions prevention. Here one can also find a lot of information on building career being a disabled person, travelling with loyal discounts, recreation programs, insurance, mortgages, and more.

Parent Education/Support

The first community resource I would like to recommend is a Center for Parent Information and Resources. To clarify, the web address is http://www.parentcenterhub.org . If you are a parent of a student with a disability, this place is right for you. It has a great variety of services for adults and adolescents with disabilities. The primary goal is to assist a disabled student who leaves his school in selecting the proper agencies and institutions for the future. This website covers a list of fields: from employment to recreation, from parent support to assistive technology. But the main focus is parent education and its role in upbringing their disabled students.

PBS Parents is a great community resources opened for all families who try to solve the problems of their disabled children, especially of those who are already students. The URL is simply http://www.pbs.org . The target audience is parents only as most of the activities and tips published at this website are for group activities (parent-child). While some of the suggested options are exclusively educational assignments, some help to resolve the potential conflicts by removing psychological barriers between a parent and child. A user is able to select the type of disability as each one requires a special approach. This community makes a good teacher out of each parent by offering numbers of free games, tests, fitness exercises, and more hints for successful development.

Health/Mental Health Services

Perhaps, this category is the most crucial one as it is dedicated to solving health problems. The first disability service for students and their parents I would like to recall in this category is the one created by Columbia University in the City of New York. The URL is https://health.columbia.edu . The site is established for local students interested in studying the issues associated with disabled young adults. This service has a special section for parents and other family members as well as for the teachers who face students with disabilities. Health.Columbia.Edu is focused on helping disabled students to realize their academic and personal opportunities through relieving equally free access and coordinating accommodations. In addition, it provides a range of valuable support services for suitable students. Disabilities Act is the basis of this organization.

At last, UCL community resource is here for the disabled students and their families. This website’s URL is https://www.ucl.ac.uk . The audience consists of the English-speaking students with mental health difficulties. In particular, the main goal is to support blind, deaf, autistic, SpLDs, and mental health problematic students. Without applying for extra funding, it is possible to obtain quality psychological help, attend thematic meetings, receive guidance and other health consultations for free.
