Companies' mission and vision statements tend to be very contradicting and often used interchangeably by some people. They might seem to mean the same thing from a shallow perspective, but the two terms mean completely two different things, and each has its specific role in the welfare of any business. However, they both help the company in achieving its goals. Every company has its unique vision and mission statements. This article focuses on comparing the vision and mission statements of two companies, Amazon and Uber.

A mission statement is defined as a driving force of the company that lays emphasis on today and what the company is expected to achieve its objectives. It gives the company the cohesiveness and shape of its culture. The mission statement answers the questions of what a company should do, who its clients are, and what services the company offers. A vision statement, on the other hand, puts more focus on the future. It is simply an assertion of certain goals that are achievable within specific timeframes ( Spear, 2017) . A vision statement is an important tool in decision making by the company stakeholders. It tells the company where it is heading and predicts the company's future. The vision statement answers the questions of, what the dreams and hopes of the company are, the solutions to the challenges the company is facing, and the changes the company inspires to implement.

Amazon’s Mission Statement vs. Uber’s Mission Statement

The mission statement of Amazon Company is "we strive to offer our customers the lowest possible prices, the best available selection, and the utmost convenience” (Amazon, 2021). From this statement, claims that the company aims at attracting prospective clients from all over the world. The statement markets the company as it indicates a promising approach to satisfy customers' needs. The statement also emphasizes affordable prices for its goods and services and convenience in accessing and delivering. Therefore, Amazon's mission statement components are; Low prices for its commodities and services, best products in the market, and utmost convenience.

Uber's mission statement is, "Transportation as reliable as running water, everywhere for everyone" (Uber, 2021). The principal role of this mission statement is to remind the company of what is expected to be done, the company's main aim, in an attempt to achieve the goals. Precisely, the statement arouses attention to prospective clients as the company indicates its potential in offering the best services all over the world. The components of this statement include improving life, exceeding expectations, and everywhere for every person. In improving lives, Uber appreciates the unprecedented problems affecting contemporary societies and thus providing exemplary services for everyone.

Amazon’s Vision Statement vs. Uber’s Vision Statement

Amazon Company’s vision statement is "to be Earth's most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online" (Amazon, 2021). This statement emphasizes the company's main aim of being the world's best company as far as e-commerce is concerned. The components of this vision statement include global reach, client-centric approach, and best product selection in the market. The component of global reach entails international management in the wider market of e-commerce. By referring to the "Earth" as a market, the corporation shows its cravings to globally extend its trade boundaries. Amazon's client-centric approach component points out the amount of consideration accorded to customers. The customers, in this case, are given much credit as part of the stakeholders. Lastly, the component of best product selection shows unending efforts a company has put in place to increase the variety of its products. These efforts attract a wider market.

Uber's vision statement is, "We ignite opportunity by setting the world in action" (Uber, 2021). According to Spear (2017) , this statement emphasizes the influence cooperate on transportation services and other related life processes. Several components can be drawn from this vision statement. These include: igniting opportunities. Uber being a transport and communication company, one of its aims is to link up people and make them reach places of their choices. By making sure that individuals arrive at their destinations in due time, opportunities are easily grabbed. "Setting the world in motion" is another component. Uber identifies itself with reliability. The company has shown the best record since its establishment in 2009. The best services offered, such as instant flights and drives, keep many individuals in motion, thus keeping the world large in motion.

Most companies make their mission statements more comprehensive to achieve high performance. Since the mission statement is the driving force for every company, the company with a more comprehensive mission statement is advantaged by virtue of what is needed to be done, the targeted clients, and the kind of services to be offered by the company. A less comprehensive mission statement will imply that there's the limited force that drives the company in achieving its set goals, and therefore, less will be achieved. According to Spear (2017) , mission and vision statements play a major role in the selection of industry specific-strategy. This is because they both indicate the company's key purpose and goals that are necessary tools for coming up with a strategy. They underscore the business's targeted customers and the kind of products and services to be consumed by these clients. Mission statements should not involve numbers, prices, percentages, and ratios. This is because a mission statement indicates a wider perspective and is thus used by strategists as a guideline during designing objectives and goals ( Spear, 2017) . If the statement contained monetary amounts, numbers, ratios, and percentages, confusion would arise between goals and targets.

In conclusion, Mission and vision statements are always unique and specific to every company. The mission tells the company what should be done today, while the vision reminds the company of its future goals. The statements aim at achieving the company's goals. They are made more comprehensive and strong in a message to remind the company of what is expected and attract more clients. They are very important tools in every cooperation as they influence decision making, industry specific-strategy selection, the type of products and services to be offered.
