The current society is based on the principle of competition whereby every part of life is like a game that one has to engage themselves at a particular level and every other person is considered as a competitor. From the rule of competition, there must be losers and winners, therefore, competitors have to do all it takes to win the game, otherwise, they end up losing. Interpersonal conflict may arise as a result of competition whereby one might experience emotional distress and feel as if their values, needs, and sense of identity are being undermined and at times threatened by someone else's behavior. Conflict among people is a part of life since people find themselves in several situations that bring disagreement with other people’s opinions and views. Conflicting arguments can either occur to weaken or at times strengthen the relationship. I had been involved in an ego related conflict with my friend where I wished to watch a different movie contrary to that which were used to. I felt like my friend always got to select the movies we see together. This time round I wanted to be the one to make a choice which brought us into an argument since my friend wanted us to watch a movie of his choice and this made me feel less powerless.

The conflict style that I used to solve the conflict with my friend that resulted from a movie choosing is avoidance. To avoid this scenario that always made me feel powerless, I chose to avoid the argument by not giving my view on the movie I wanted to watch and decided not to accompany him. This was effective since I avoided an issue that I had no chance of winning since my friend always felt very powerful that he is the only one with the authority to decide. This avoided the emotional distress and ended up creating space for each other. This would also trigger my friend to give me a chance to make a choice next time.
Based on the above discussion, conflicts always emerge among people and the way to solve them is what matters. Avoidance plays a great role in solving such a conflict rather than engage in a conflict that always makes someone feel less powerless. The party that always feels powerful, as a result, might be triggered to consider the other in decision making.
