Peter Oswald is a 48 years old grocery owner in New York. He serves more than 25 individuals in a day and offers home delivery services and store collection. He expressed some signs of nervousness, but he was able to calm down and respond to the questions well.
Mr. Oswald conveyed a high level of interaction with electronic media. Besides the grocery business, he has been using electronic media for an estimated 30 years. He owns a television, smartphone, and a home stereo system. The development in technology has made him see new electronic media being developed, such as websites and smartphones. Despite the high level of knowledge, Mr. Oswald has experienced his fair share of bad and good moments using electronic media. He shares his worst electronic media experience, which involves the propagation of a fake message. His experience was terrifying when one family member came up with hoax news about the disappearance of one of his nephews. The news propagated fast using the electronic media, mainly through the family platforms. It took them time before they recognized it was fake news. There was a tremendous amount of damage that it had caused to the family members and friends.
There are several positive impacts that Mr. Oswald has experienced through electronic media. The major one is for entertainment purposes; he loves watching sitcoms and has a number of subscriptions to the channels. Secondly, he was pleased with the way information has become easily accessible. Various media outlets have been developed and cover almost everything. Thirdly, electronic media has helped his business flourish. The development of a website has enabled his grocery to advertise some fresh groceries, including their prices. It offers his clients the ability to choose a wide range of products from the information provided. In addition, he can communicate with his customers via the grocery telephone, from taking orders to the delivery process.
On a scale of ten, Mr. Oswald rated his electronic media experience as an eight. In addition, he views electronic media as a tool that has destroyed good morals in society. He suggested that there should be a way to control what the media displays to the public. In that case, he implied that most young people are hooked to the television or smartphones all day, which may lead to lifestyle complications such as obesity and loss of eyesight, a sentiment shared by Bener et al. (2011). Also, there are violent programs accessible to everyone, which affects the psychological growth of children. This view is shared by Huesmann (2009), whose research showed that electronic media violence affects children psychologically and makes them more aggressive. Furthermore, he elaborated that the current music videos use vulgar language and portray the message that alcohol, drugs, and sex are the enjoyable part of life.
He concluded by stating that people should not trust what they see or hear in the media. People are looking to make quick money and will do anything, including publishing false stories. Also, the media portrays a hyper-reality that looks real, and people in real life try to live. Notably, he articulated that electronic media should only be used for a positive purpose.
Comparison and Contrasting
Technology has changed dramatically and has led to the development of various electronic media. The age gap between Mr. Oswald and me has contributed to a significant difference in our electronic media experiences. Even though we share some of the experiences, media freedom has facilitated a lot of moral decay in society as the media can display any content (Schneider, 2019). It has increased violence and crime as many people try to live the lifestyles portrayed in the media. I also believe there is a need for a standard regulation that will help prevent explicit material exposure to a particular population.
In addition, the media has been a reliable source of information. It is easier to obtain a particular article from a website or re-watch a documentary and access any information that they may require. The medial has also enabled every person to do business (Anderson & Rainie, 2020). Currently, companies are advertising themselves online via their websites. They can display the types of services they offer, and a client can communicate with the company.
On the other hand, I have been able to explore more on electronic media, and in my own experience, the media partly contribute to moral decay. It is not a mandate of the media to control what people do with their information they provide. Parents should be able to help their children on what to or not to watch. The electronic media is doing its work of informing the public of the current issues. In conclusion, electronic media should be embraced since it has facilitated many positive impacts in society, including making new friends from all over the world and timely access to news and entertainment.
