The videos I just watched are about the life of a prominent contemporary Asian female composer who is currently in the United States. Chien Yi’s musical career began at the age of three. She first learned to play the piano, and at the age of four, Chien learned body, and up to the age of seventeen, she familiarized herself and had gained skills on how to play various instruments. The skills and knowledge gained propelled her to become a composer. Her music career was then harbored by the dark period of her life, before the 70s. This period marked Chinese history, during which there was a significant cultural revolution in China. Chien was forced to go back to the rural areas to do farming, which was hard labor. After two years of being subjected to labor, Chien returned to the city, where she got a job as a concertmaster in the Opera House orchestra. By then, Chien was seventeen years. At the age of 25, she joined college to become a composer. Her inspiration for composing great pieces stems from the joy of sharing them with the rest of the world.
As for her music, it is very soft and smooth, and each time I enjoyed listening to it. It is interesting how she begins with a slow tempo at the beginning of each musical piece and eventually builds up to a fast one. Generally, Chien’s music is colorful and fun to listen to.

It was also interesting to learn about another female Asian composer, Hyekung Lee, who reveals how difficult it was for her to rise in her career due to cultural factors. According to her, the music industry was dominated by whites and particularly males. Similarly, her music stands out, and I loved listening to it.

After watching the videos, I learned that Chien began her music career at the age of three. However, her success in the career music was not without challenges. Before the 70s, she faced a very dark phase of her life where she had to do hard labor in the rural farm areas due to the ongoing cultural revolution in Chinese history at the time. After some time, she was able to go back to the city, where she became a concertmaster and later joined college to pursue her career. Chien is a positive person and shares her music with the world. Besides, she encourages upcoming young women to pursue their careers. Her music is soothing to the ears and fun to listen to.
I also listened to Hyekung Lee mention the difficulties she underwent before she gained recognition in the industry. According to her, being female presented challenges as white males dominated the industry. Her music is equally smooth and exciting to listen to.
