What do people experience relationship anxiety?

Despite some having a smooth encounter with relationships this doesn’t always naturally happen for some. It is likely to lead to relationship anxiety owing to the fear of having a commitment phobia. However, when talking of commitment, the topic has always come out in the limelight. From experience, those found to experience such fears are less likely to stay in any relationship for long. It is despite experiencing that burning desire to love, or rather having the same reciprocated back at them just like the rest. Commitment anxiety can thus limit one from exercising a free will to engage in a relationship. On the other hand, this does not imply they rarely hope to engage in such connections but only overwhelmed by anxiety (Grohol, 2018).

In most instances, there is a rare chance of such individuals staying in a relationship or even committing themselves in one. This is despite showing a bit of commitment during the initial stages only to abandon their quest. At times, this is likely to come about as a result of being excited by the feeling of falling in love with another person only to leave the other potential relationship. On the same note, there are those who may tend to anticipate how the situation is prone to end leading to their decision. However, this doesn’t always apply to all, owing to some having gone through a painful past thus may be stacked in the past and simply finding it hard to move on. This can persist for days, months and even years. Whenever this persists without taking an appropriate action one is bound to continue experiencing a severe problem and may not even be willing to confront the issue. The condition is also found to affect both sexes.

What causes commitment phobia?

The phobia is associated with a varied number of causes as experienced by those found to experience such a problem. To a great extent, however, among those discovered to have an adverse effect concerning this subject are said to have gone through a bad romantic encounter. This can range from either having a personal experience which can be too traumatic or could as well learn this from others as a result of being observant (Brogaard, 2015). A typical example is witnessed from a case where a person raised in an abusive home may exhibit an absolute fear of him going through a similar encounter. It can still hurt those they fall in love with because of lack of commitment. Such tendencies can also come about as a result of the fear of engaging in a wrong relationship, abuse as well as trust issues to name a few.

In conclusion, regardless of what the cause may be it is clear that such individuals need help. As a result, they don’t have to go through such a situation all their life because it’s likely to robe off a good part of their life while living in fear. On the other hand, change can’t come about easily without ever acknowledging their current state (Papa, 2018). It is thus crucial for them to start by recognizing that they ought to embrace change for this to happen. In many instances, some are bound to find it hard dating again or rather settling in a relationship. Counseling can also help restore such individual’s back to their normal self and, thus, reduce the likelihood of them continuing with this phobia.
