Firearms have become lethal weapons in the U.S because they are not properly handled. To today, firearm control is facing controversies because most Americans still believe that the Second Amendment permits them to possess firearms for protection reasons. Even if it’s true, owning and carrying firearms to very sensitive places like schools, rallies, and government buildings are not restricted. Firearms should, therefore, be more strictly controlled to minimize mass shooting, violence, and deaths caused by the same in the United States.

In the history of America, several instances of mass shooting have been recorded due to uncontrolled ownership of firearms. A good and recent example was on 1 st October 2017 where the country witnessed a horrible incidence of a mass shooting. The incidence left 59 deaths and over 500 Americans seriously wounded by their fellow American who owned a firearm. These statistics clearly indicate that owning uncontrolled firearms in the U.S is a way of providing its citizens a get way to commit crimes. Currently, the number of people who are at a high risk of losing their lives due to misuse of firearms is more than those who are likely to perish due to lack of self-defense. Controlling firearms would minimize the number of deaths that originate from individual owned firearms. Firearms should be used for crime prevention. However, it is the opposite of the expectations. Like it is done with cars, why can’t firearms be regulated either?

On the other hand, critics claim that controlling firearms will deny Americans the sense of personal safety because it will violate their right of defense and self-protection. In a congress of 27 th April 2017, Firearm instructors reported an increase in the number of firearms users who were training on how to use guns in firearms for self-defense courses. Generally, women are looking for firearms to protect themselves against crime. In states such as Detroit and Michigan, rape cases have increased forcing more women to opt for firearms for their safety. Since the year 2000 to the year 2015, the growth rate of firearms was 3.81 times in African American women that of European American women because women do not rely on their spouse or neighbor for their security.

However, the argument above seems baseless given the fact that possessing firearms impairs even the security of the holder of the firearm. The risk of committing suicide using a home gun is 90 times higher than those people without firearms. Firearms do not guarantee security because cases of violence have skyrocketed because American citizens are allowed to possess firearms. One meta-analysis found strong evidence in the year 2005 that possessing a firearm in a homestead exacerbates the risk of homicide, accidents, and suicide. People who have firearms and stay at home have high chances of committing homicide than those homes that do not possess firearms. American states with more firearms also record high numbers of deaths from firearms where children are more likely to die due to firearm accidents. In addition, the federal government is mandated to ensure the safety of all Americans regardless of the state they live in.

In conclusion, the enactment and implementation of laws to control ownership of firearms in the U.S are overdue. Controlling firearms will minimize deaths that originate from mass shooting, accidents, homicide, and suicide. Instances of violence are also likely to reduce. If loss of life and lawlessness is caused by this amendment, it should be reexamined and reinterpreted properly in order to be effective for every American. Guns have claimed the lives of innocent people and the main issue with guns lies with the issuance and ownership of unlicensed guns.
