Organizations, agencies, and corporations all over the globe have for a long time been guided in their daily functioning by vision and mission statements. This culture can be considered as long overdue and that which needs to be revolutionized and replaced by a more vibrant and progressive one. While sticking to vision and mission statements may seem to help companies, institutions and corporations to run their affairs, it may seem monotonous that one subscribes to only one or few agenda over time. This essay will provide a critical review of why it is important to find other options while adhering to this old age tendency of vision and mission statements.

The mission and vision statements followed and subscribed to by organizations and institutions are critical in charting the directions and perspectives that an organization needs to adopt in its undertakings. These mission and vision statements which are inculcated in the stakeholders say the employees, management team and students in case of a learning institution go a long way in ensuring a uniformity of purpose. It creates in individuals a sense of belonging and as so unites them in doing all they can to achieve what they have set out to do (Darbi, 2012). Consequently, running of institutions and organizations is made easier since every player knows what is expected of him or her. So as to achieve the unity of purpose, there is a need for rigorous efforts in reminding the key players on what they stand for. Most organizations and institutions choose to put this mission, and vision statements in writing where they are strategically placed say in entrance points and offices for everyone to see.

Contrary to the prevailing beliefs, mission and vision statements are not the major drivers in the formulation and eventual implementation of institutional and organizational strategies. The business environment has changed over time, and one cannot help but come up with new ways of conducting business. Mission and vision statements tend to tie people to a particular aspect and way of doing the thing which is considered boring, monotonous rigid and non-progressive (Darbi, 2012). While mission and vision statements have worked for the longest time, it is the time that companies took a different stance and allow for individuals’ creativity and innovation. This can be achieved by doing away with such statements and letting people find their own way but which is aimed at ensuring positive results for the organizational goals.
