I am African American from the United States and a product or urban environment. There are overall values in the United States of America such as mobility, equality, individualism, privacy, future orientation, informality, competition, and self-help. Change to the Americans means continuous improvement, progress, and growth. Americans believe in equal opportunities for all people and that all the citizens are equally important regardless of their race, religion, or political associations. Americans are perceived as self-centred people, lonely and isolated rather than group members in terms of privacy. Its citizens are very proud of their accomplishments and are willing to put extra effort to better themselves and accumulate more wealth. Competition is also a solid value to the Americans who believe that it brings out the best in people and that free enterprises produce success and progress over time. They also think that wasting time is immoral; time is a valuable asset that should be utilized well; working hard is right and pays. These values are behind Americans' economic success; they guide American's work ethics and relations with each other and with other countries.
As an African American adult, certain cultural aspects form a significant part of me. I adore and practice them even now that I am an adult. In my culture, we find unity and strength in communal worship. During the slavery period, many African American slaves relied on their spirituality and faith for inspiration which enabled them to endure the hardships and mistreatments colonialists put them through. I am a religious person, a Baptist. When times are tough, my faith strengthens me and helps me persevere and overcome trying times; it motivates me to work hard, be resilient and treat all people with respect as we are all equal in my religion. Family is also another essential aspect of my culture. It is the family members' responsibility to take care of each other, especially the old and the less fortunate, respect and practice good morals. As an adult, I love and respect all my family members: I visit them often and ensure that they are all okay. African American culture stresses sharing with the needy, which means a lot to us. I visit orphanages and homes for the elderly and contribute items, whether finances or material stuff, regularly.
I have been a Baptist since childhood. All my family members are also Baptists, and the religion was passed down to us by our forefathers, who were also Baptists. Conflicts due to religious disputes are resolved through mediation. The mediator who is a neutral party uses religious values and world views to help conflicting parties resolve the issues at hand. This religious preference shows that my heritage has a solid foundation and bonds passed from generation to generation. I am still a Baptist to date.
I am a heterosexual female. My family is neutral to matters of gender and sexual orientation differences; they are open-minded and accepting. Sexism is highly condemned in my culture; instead, such issues are communicated to avoid problems and avoid retaliation. Gender roles and political positions are still defined by gender in my culture. Currently, gender roles are not equally divided; gender inequalities still exist. Conflicts between gender roles are solved through mediation, litigation, and arbitration. African American families' child-rearing is viewed as a communal responsibility. Respect and obedience are key factors that lead to meaningful marriages.
I am 25 years old. I only engage in impactful peer connections that are beyond classroom sessions. I am a very social person and utilize every opportunity to connect with my age mates to catch up and celebrate our success. I treat people just as I would want to be treated. When I visit home for the elderly, I take gifts to show affection to them. I talk to my parents often over the phone to ensure that they are okay. At 25, I am more conversant with family and my origin experiences; coming from an African American household, I have learned the power of forgiveness and letting go just as my forefathers did to slave traders.
My family has been operating different businesses for a long time. Socioeconomics contributes to a family’s well-being and affects various aspects such as parenting practices, stability, and children's developmental outcomes. My socioeconomic history has not changed over time. Music, art, and clothing preferences were significant in my family of origin; they were used on different occasions to express feelings such as the need for justice. Our political priorities revolve around equality for all people and the need for development. This came about because of the oppressions faced by people of color, with us being the majority.
As a child, people would treat us as inferior because of our race. Most people were not also open to genderism and ageism; the LGBT community was calling for reforms because of the harassment they had to endure. My parents made our household rules and ensured that each of us adhered to them, failure to which our parents would punish them. Such norms are communicated to younger generations at an early age during book and story reading sessions. My family celebrates black history month and Christmas, involving engaging with people from different religions and races. Most of my friends were either white, Hispanics, or Asians, and we all related just like friends I had who were from my culture. Racial discrimination and cases where more privileged races murder people of color have been negatively affecting my family.
By the time I was in third grade, I was fully aware of my heritage, my parents taught me our traditions from an early age, and by this time, I understood myself and my culture a lot more. They taught me to love and appreciate myself, my heritage, skin color, hair, and everything that made me stand out as an African American female. I chose to embrace my heritage and culture because, after all, that is where I truly belong. Cultural identity is critical but accepting different cultures, religions, and races is the best decision. Knowing that all people deserve to be treated well and respected unites all races and religious faiths and leads to a more harmonious and peaceful world.
