Robots are fascinating machines designed with a human-like appearance and programmed by a computer to perform various activities that human beings can do. Continued technological developments have improved the robotics field, creating more sophisticated robots that threaten the human race. However, building a robot can be quite challenging since it requires a wide range of functions to equip them with human capabilities. Therefore, this paper will focus on building a robot, outlining human-like functions it needs, the human nervous system’s subdivision on the robot, its brain parts, and problems associated with building the robot.

Robots require certain functions to make them behave like human beings and operate efficiently in the real world. The following are functions that would make a robot behave like a human; ability to communicate, ability to grasp objects, ability to move limbs, perception of danger, facial recognition, ability to memorize words and familiar objects, ability to move by walking, the ability to have power/energy, and independence. Thus, the above functions are evident in human beings, and they can be incorporated when designing robots to enable them to behave like men. However, this approach would be problematic since certain human characteristics cannot be incorporated into robots. They include values, emotions, and responses to stimuli. Robots will not perceive ethical and unethical behavior because they are programmed, unlike humans, who have brains and learn through experiences. Also, robots will not have emotions since they are not attached to humans and the natural environment. Finally, robots will not respond to stimuli since they do not have a physical attachment to the surrounding.

The human nervous system is categorized into two subdivisions; the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). However, the peripheral nervous system would be less important for a robot than for a human being. By illustration, the peripheral nervous system consists of the automatic nervous system and the somatic nervous system responsible for transmitting sensory information and involuntary body functions like blood flow, digestion, breathing, and heartbeat. The PNS would not be important for a robot since they do not respond to stimuli, breathe, and respire like humans.

If the robot had a similar brain as humans, I would make the following parts smaller since they are less important; diencephalon and medulla oblongata. I would remove the diencephalon since it contains the thalamus, epithalamus, and the hypothalamus responsible for regulating body temperature, appetite, and sleep-wake hormones not needed by robots. I would also reduce the size of the medulla oblongata since its functions include breathing, sneezing, and swallowing, not required by robots. The following parts of the brain will be vital for the robot; cerebellum, since it helps in the movement of the limbs and enhances the maintenance of upright posture, equilibrium, and balance. The cerebrum and its lobes would be necessary for the robot since it helps in facial recognition, verbal memory, attention, and vision. Therefore, these brain parts will assist the robot in accomplishing crucial activities.

Building a robot with a human-like brain and nervous system might be problematic since robots do not have feelings and intuition similar to humans. Also, robots do not have physiological activities controlled by the brain and the nervous system. Generally, robots do not function like humans.
