Most kids, especially those in the lower grades, often have challenges when it comes to writing. One the best ways to encourage writing and help children learn how to be creative and develop their writing skills is by adopting play based forms of learning. Children can quickly develop their writing skill from simple methods at home. The trick is to make the kids feel like they are not in school. The experience should appear like a game in which you play with the kids without them realizing that they are actually in a special kind of a lesson. There are many ways one can employ in coming up with activities aimed at developing writing skills for children. This essay will identify and discuss some of the methods which can significantly improve the writing skills of kids.

It is quite critical that every parent recognizes activities and things which their children love doing. For instance, most kids love monster movies and often try to imitate the characters in these movies during their play times. You may decide to play such a game with your kid. Pretend your trapped in a desert and the only thing you can do is to make a poster written help. You may use paint or large papers to make the word ‘help' appear enormous. Such simple ways will help the kid learn how to write certain words one by one ( Pyle & DeLuca, 2017) .

Another method of developing writing skills for kids is by use of flying messages. A flying message is a game in which a message is written on a paper strapped on a ball. The kid will sit some distance away with a pencil and a tape. Put a message on the paper, stick it on the ball using a tape and toss the ball to the kid. The kid reads the instructions and does exactly what is required by the instructions. For instance, you may ask the kid to sound like a cat. The kid then puts down a message on the ball in a similar way and sends it back. This activity may impact greatly on the kid’s writing, and the kid's writing skills will develop significantly. The kid will not even realize that the game was actually a learning lesson aimed at improving his skills.

Another method of developing a child's writing skills is by changing the idea of writing into a game. To every child, any competition seems to be a game. If you about two to three or four kids, you may introduce a game in the form of a competition. Small gifts such as cookies may be provided for the ones who write certain simple words correctly. Simple words should be used, those that are familiar to the kids. For instance, you may ask the kids to write the word ‘hen' or cat. Every time a child writes a word correctly, he or she receives a cookie or candy.

Children learn by mastering the things around them. Knowing how to write the simple things and structures at home or school may prove to be quite helpful in the development of their writing skills. For instance, you ask kids to name and write some of the structures in the house such as furniture, foodstuff and utensils. Making this a habit will help the kids learn how to write many other things they see around ( Peterson, McIntyre & Forsyth, 2016) .

Some children find it undesirable to write while others completely hate the idea of writing. Introducing writing during playing time and making writing appear like a form of a game may help curb this challenge. Play based forms of writing such as flying messages among others are quite helping in the development of a child’s writing skills.
